Foam Talent 2011
The year 2011 marks the fifth annual Foam Magazine Talent Issue. For the first time, Foam presents an extensive exhibition with all 15 Foam Talents.
This project is a personal and darkly comic exploration of menopause, its symptoms (and tools for relief), and how we—as individuals and society—have been socialised to view...and overlook...female aging through media depictions.
Using self-portraiture to explore the common tropes of the menopausal woman (as seen in magazines, medical pamphlets, Disney films, and tv—ie the witch, the bitch, the "Karen", the wise elder, the "Golden Girls")—these images have been turned into objects that reflect the symptoms and coping mechanisms of menopause.
Paired with each character is the silicon vulva representing the hidden, overlooked, buried woman we overlook as she ages. Can you find her?
