Description

I RAGAZZI is a large tabloid-format softcover which explores the various forms of masculinity displayed at the medieval horse race, il Palio di Siena, in Tuscany, while also capturing the event's unique beauty, chaos and drama. Deep-diving into the bizarre festival atmosphere which takes over Siena, the visual peculiarities of Palio will transport you back in time, and offer a glimpse of a place governed by ritual and tradition, that doesn’t feel the need to adhere to the same gender roles and norms as the rest of Western Europe.

The book covers the time from the beginning of each Palio week until the climactic race itself, including the batterie (trials) and the assigning of the horses, the prove (practice races) the benedizione (horse benedictions) and the corteo storico parade leading up to the final event.

“For all its contradictions, Palio exhibits so many positive values that most of the Western world has lost over the centuries: collective identity, continuity, ritual, and belonging. I encourage us to protect it and to learn from it.”
