Description

In 2001, race riots swept across northern towns and cities, furthering the rift between white and Asian communities. Then came 9/11, further distorting western perceptions of Muslims and their faith, and the rise of far-right political groups that gained both notoriety and popularity across the UK. This ultimately intensified the polarisation between whites and Asians in areas like Pendle and Burnley.

Today the area has almost 40% of children living in poverty, and communities remain divided. With little investment in resources by the UK government, local initiatives are left to try and heal the wounds that have been left unattended.

Enter the Whitefield Youth Association. Founded and directed by local Hamid Khan in 2002 as a response to the riots, the initiative uses sports as a development tool for young people. They believe that every young person should have access to opportunities that will help them develop as individuals. This belief drives their charity, and inspires them to deliver real change in the area.

Acclaimed fashion and portrait photographer from Pendle, Nik Hartley, captures the spirit of Whitefield Youth Association in this essay shot in spring 2022. Youthful, energetic and determined.
