Description

JPN Journal is a photographic project by photographer Karim Skalli exploring Japan through the eyes of an outsider living in the country during one of the most turbulent few years of our lives. Looking for simple beauty and moments of silence that dwell in everyday life. In recent years, Japan has become one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, welcoming over 30 million tourists In 2019 alone. Due to the impact of coronavirus, the number of visitors in 2020 decreased by 97.7% from the previous year to only 58,000. I felt it was important to record this moment in time, a time like no other, and create a journal of my experience living and observing a country so different from my own. I’m so grateful I got to experience it here in Japan, a place like no other.
