Title

Won't Go To Heaven - The Graffiti Of The Sex Pistols

Description

On a short street in the outskirts of London’s Soho, a vast musical history exists within its walls. Denmark Street has hosted music publishers, instrument shops, gig venues, and recording studios. The Rolling Stones recorded their first album there, Elton John wrote songs on a roof, and David Bowie lived in a converted ambulance. It also played its part in the history of punk as, early in their career, The Sex Pistols lived and recorded there. I’d heard that Johnny Rotten had adorned the walls there with graffiti of the band and its associates, so decided to try and gain access to photograph them. In 2015 I pleaded with the building’s manager to get access to the room and was told to come back another time. I tried again a week later, and was told the same thing. This happened a few times until, either he took pity on me or I’d worn him down. But, either way… I was in!
