Photographs from my first ever trip to Japan – exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in October 2019. The work aims to reflect the excitement I felt growing up, dreaming of Tokyo from the other side of the world. Looking back at the images now (particularly since the pandemic), my time there feels like a dream, the neon-drenched streets look too perfect. I think of the images as something ‘hyper-real’, a blend of fiction and reality that is impossible to separate.The book is 24-pages, singer sewn with black thread. The tall, thin format references both traditional Japanese script and the vertiginous nature of the Tokyo metropolis.
