Petal is a photographic series by Bex Day, created in celebration of the uniqueness
of the vulva. Each vulva pictured in the collection is covered by either a single petal
or flower to simultaneously reflect their shared qualities and individuality in an
effort to dismantle the taboos that envelop female genitalia.
Colloquial terms for the vagina, including “pussy”, “cunt” and “gash”, have all
been adopted as negatives in the English language; being used as insults, curses or
as an insinuation of weakness or passivity. In society as we know it, the vagina has for
too long been perceived as the lesser sexual organ, conceptualised not on its qualities
but what it lacks in comparison to the penis. Even the word vagina itself evokes a
squeamishness among many, highlighting the urgent need for a change of perspective.
Young children, especially people who are socialised and raised as female,
are brought up to name their private parts “flower” and “foo-foo” among other
diminutive names. This foundation has created a public misconception of what is
considered a “normal” vagina, partially due to typecasting in porn and portrayals in
mainstream media, but also the result of cultural censorship.
The shape, colour and size of each petal has been chosen by each individual
featured to represent how they see their own vagina. The series aims to unify
female, non-binary and female-identifying individuals by showing the similarities of
their vaginas rather than focusing on what is considered different.
Spanning varying ages, races, genders, hair types, sizes and shapes, the series is a
captivating and colourful compilation, with each image being accompanied by a message
written by the subject about their own feelings about and experiences of their bodies.
The book also features a foreword by blogger, author and public speaker
Natalie Alexis Lee, who has more than 110,000 followers on Instagram.</text>

<text>Xenitia is an archive, centered on displacement to Greece. It is framed by two motifs: “nostos” (Classical Greek; to return home, homecoming) and “algos” (Classical Greek; pain, grief). Together, these affect-laden words form the root of “nostalgia”. “Xenitia” itself is a Greek term that encompasses the state of being a foreigner, otherness, estrangement, loss, distance, and a profound yearning for home soil.

The collection, which was made in 2016, produces a complex mosaic of movement and feeling within Greece. In 1923, a treaty was drawn up between the governments of Greece and Turkey which forcibly displaced millions of people from their homes. Recent economic hardship in Greece has produced a fresh wave of emigration. At the same time, hundreds of people fleeing war and persecution at home arrive on Greek shores every day. Xenitia elicits comparison between the local and the universal, conjuring similarities amongst diverse experiences.</text>

<text>1121 is a collection of photographs capturing the last five years of my life. This journey began in 2018 when I moved from a small village in Catalonia to the UK, capturing day-to-day moments both in the heart of London and the peaceful corners of my hometown, La Roca del Vallès.

1121 started as a loveletter to my closest people, especially those I've lost touch with due to distance, with the idea to portray the differences between life in a small village and the chaotic energy of a big city. Exploring themes as motion, the youth and electronica.

<text>Stemming from a photo diary started over eight years ago, these images are moments, fragments and impressions of places visited, people encountered and experiences felt. They are a dialectic of remembering and forgetting. It is a book on daily life, recordings from the world around the artist — at home and further away. A fleeting cross-section of beaches, road trips, friends, moments and the beauty of light. The book begins and ends with starling murmurations — because our memories are always there, forming patterns as they dance around silently in our minds.</text>

The project is the result of a year long socially engaged residency on a housing estate. Artist Ocean Farini and a bunch of under 30's thought it would be cool to start their own fashion label. So they did.

                <text>‘Omo’ means child in Yorùbá.
In 2019, Rubee Samuel self-funded a trip to Lagos to teach photography at two primary schools.
During her workshops she introduced the children to the work of established West African photographers and to the ideas behind fashion stories: styling and storytelling through photography.

With props, clothes and simple film cameras, she enabled the children to enter the fantasy world of dressing up within the grown-up conceptual world of an editorial fashion story.

Omo Nigeria is Rubee Samuel’s first book and depicts the results of her teachings: the fashion stories, concepted, styled and shot by the children themselves as well as her portrait sessions with the children.

“I believe that early exposure to the arts is vital to building the next new generation of creatives and image-makers.”
