This project focuses on the mixed influences from East and West, the effects of global capitalism on the Polish landscape dominated by consuming colourful advertising. Lack of experts in local housing associations resulted in randomly chosen shades, turning the streets into a vivid collage of pastel tower blocks. Project presents kitsch of rough-and-ready billboards, suburban night-clubs and bright-coloured concrete blocks. It explores omnipresent visual chaos in the urban landscape and search for a ‘better world'. Title Disco Polo represents locally popular music genre of the same name, which developed in Eastern Poland around the time of the political transition. The genre created its own aesthetics, from the outfits to the venues where it is performed. Naive lyrics and over-saturated video clips often embody longing for western capitalism and hope for better future. 'This picture of a plastic palm tree in the fog is from Paulina Korobkiewicz’s Disco Polo project, documenting the aesthetic of Poland’s transition to global capitalism after 1989. It’s an interesting example of how Western consumerism impacted the minds, tastes, dreams, aspirations and visual culture of the country. Many oppositions meet in this shot: not just East and West. There is a sense of melancholy to it, as well as a sense of humour. Title A name given to the resource Haystack Heroes: Westray 2021 Description An account of the resource As a Londoner based amateur photographer who generally focuses on the urban life, I have recently started to appreciate the remoteness and tranquillity some places can provide. For my very first post-pandemic holiday I decided to visit the Orkney, and I was amazed by the beautiful landscapes and the authenticity of their people. While visiting Westray, a small island at the far north of the archipelago, I stumbled upon a carefully dressed scarecrow. And another one. And one more, and so forth. Little did I know they had been created by families all across the isle with the aim to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Powered primarily by kind donations, their search and rescue service has been saving lives for nearly 200 years. This is a collection of the sixteen I met on my way while traveling all over the island of Westray. Part of the proceeds of this photo project will be donated to the RNLI. With this personal project and my pictures of many places so meaningful for their memories, I want to celebrate these two women and theit life in London, in the 1950s. Their strength, their ability to survive and to make do, in a big struggle but with great dignity, always inspired my desire to “be”. I started to collect every little thing, a small object or trace of my Grandma’s English time. I remember when she was still alive at her place – between a cigarette and a cup of tea – how her tales from that past captured my imagination. I chose to resume and recollect the traces of their lives in a London that, although changed, still talks about that time. This project ideally begins with one of the first sentences my mother learned, “Twenty Weights, please”, while trying to buy some cigarettes (twenty) for her mother. This is a diary: written and lived by them, read and re- written by me through an in-and-out-of-time journey which enters my present from the past, leaving me with a sense of melancholy. The images I shot over the last 20 years safeguard this emotional archive: no sign of time, just working places, the house, empty roads they ran with their bicycles, the market street full of leftovers, the light at the end of the day.
