Title A name given to the resource Green Land Blue Water, A Field Guide Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Victoria Crayhon Description An account of the resource I am interested in the history and context of depictions of landscape and nature, whether pastoral or sublime, and aim to question what such depictions (in my case, photographic) can become–given the reality of melting ice, rising seas, growing intensity of storms and floods, all caused by the warming of our planet. The primary location chosen for this project is Greenland, which contains a multitude of examples of complications in addressing climate change. There is the overpowering presence of the shrinking of the ancient ice cap, glaciers melting fresh water into the oceans, the history of colonialism and the indigenous experience of climate change. There is also a desire to create a tourist destination that, paradoxically, will advance progression of the ice melt, yet will provide much needed economic opportunities and advancement of infrastructure. In addition, there is worldwide government and corporate interest into mining Greenland’s rich trove of resources and minerals, which will become more accessible the faster its ice sheet disappears. The title of this project refers to a US Cold War missile detection system of radar stations over Greenland and Arctic regions of North America, put in place to protect American cities from nuclear attack. Thule Air Base in the far north is now the US Air Force Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Today the base is used for monitoring space for defense purposes. Specifically, it is home to the 21st Space Wing’s network of sensors that provides early missile warning, space surveillance and control. The term "Distant Early Warning Line", besides referring directly to the US military presence, is evocative of the fact that Greenland is perhaps the most important region in the world right now in terms of teaching us about climate change, the cost of exploitation of land itself, and asking the question of who is paying attention and why . Rooted in a family history marked by deportation, exile, silence and fragmented memories, the trilogy transforms intimate traces into reflections on what remains after loss and how personal histories resonate with collective experiences. Across three autonomous volumes, L’Élégance de vos absences explores the dialogue between individual remembrance and universal questions of inheritance, resilience and transmission. Volume I – Comme un vivant porte-bonheur (2025) The first volume inaugurates this long-term artistic research by exploring the fragile relationship between presence and absence, between what is inherited and what remains unspoken. Emerging from the artist’s family history — marked by the deportation of his grandfather during the Second World War and by the silences that followed — the book does not seek to reconstruct the past. Instead, it examines how memory continues to inhabit the present through fragments, gestures and invisible inheritances. Photography is interwoven with autobiographical writing, family archives, handwritten documents and handcrafted facsimiles, creating a narrative where each element resonates with the others. The sequencing of images and the material qualities of the book invite a slow reading experience, allowing memory to unfold gradually. An original musical composition by Thibaut Torzuoli, accessible through an integrated QR code, extends the work beyond the printed page. This series of photographs makes use of a vernacular hand gesture, common in West Virginia, which serves as an impromptu map of the state. The drawn line that becomes visible in the final two images in the sequence corresponds to the route that was driven between Huntington and Buffalo. With this piece of personal geography mapped on my hand, I visited a palm reader, located along the route, to have the line interpreted, as it existed within the arrangement of my natural palm print. Title A name given to the resource Vicky by Ilja Keizer 2366.PER.KEIZER Description An account of the resource ‘Vicky’ is a personal and raw collection of portraits and mobile phone snapshots shot in the summer of 2020 by Dutch photographer Ilja Keizer. While the photographer is mostly known for his portrait work, this book has a much more personal, documentary style approach. With shooting just starting spontaneously after meeting Vicky on an awfully hot day, in a small rural town in the East of the Netherlands. The images were made during an intense journey that led them around Europe in a little over 3 months, with the trip ending in a tiny Polish village where Vicky lives.
