<text>In 2010 David Monahan invited people emigrating from Dublin to participate in his Leaving Dublin project. Its success in articulating the feelings of the everyday losses and gains associated with emigration has led to the work being locally and internationally recognised. It is a significant artistic contribution to the conversation around the current wave of emigration from Ireland.

While shooting the series, Monahan developed relationships with his sitters which led him to further investigate the places they had left behind and the places they now inhabit. This investigation comes together now for the first time in book form under the title of On Leaving.

On Leaving features over 150 photographs in 3 series – Empty Spaces: Desolate dawn landscapes of locations sacred to the participants of the works; Leaving Dublin: a series of highly stylised night time portraits of single people, couples and families on the cusp of a major life changing move; and Visitation: a series of photographs made during visits to participants in their new homes.

<text>‘Orbita’ is a district in the southwest of the Almaty city, Kazakhstan. This area began to be developed with typical Soviet blocks in the 1970s. Today, Orbita stands as a realm unto itself, a ‘city within a city,’ because it is isolated from other city areas, bordered on one side by a river and on the other by a highway.

I often pass by Orbita on my way to and from work. As autumn and winter fog descends upon Almaty, I find myself drawn to the edges of Orbita, where Soviet edifices loom like specters in the fog. I’ve always wanted to take a stroll there and explore this area.

From January to March of 2024, I embarked on a quest — a visual odyssey dedicated to capturing the essence of Orbita in a visual diary. I started this project on the day of an earthquake in Almaty January 22nd and finished it on my birthday, March 2nd. The diary tells about the light and dark sides of Orbita: about children’s ice rinks, past murders, graffiti, space communication ground station and meetings with old friends, but mostly it talks about my perception of the surrounding world.

<text>Like for so many others, the nationwide lockdown of March 2020 marked a challenging transitional period for Joshua J Sneade. His life and career were put on hold and for the first time in more than five years, he returned home to the county of Shropshire. Although initially feeling like a backwards step, the move allowed Joshua an opportunity to reconnect with the landscape of his youth. Spurred on by the restlessness of months indoors and inspired by the bucolic poetry of A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad, Joshua set out to discover the beauty that the county had to offer.

Long walks became a daily occurrence and the rising temperatures of spring, combined with Houseman’s many references to water, led Joshua to discover a passion for wild swimming. As spring gave way to summer, and as lockdown started to ease, Joshua welcomed the chance to rekindle old friendships, too long neglected amongst the rigours of modern life. Together, he and a group of friends recaptured the spirit of a carefree youth as they uncovered the riches of the local landscape and the meditative properties of the region’s hidden waters.

On the Idle Hill of Summer is a documentation of those paradoxically halcyon days in the summer of Covid-19. Days spent in the pursuit of something that, just for a little while, could distract from the uncertain future of a world in turmoil. It is a celebration of the equanimity found amongst the unchanging stillness of the Shropshire Hills and in the cold embrace of rivers, lakes and quarries. Most of all, it is, in retrospect, a reminder to savour the smaller moments: the anticipation of poring over maps, tracing lines of blue ink; the satisfaction of the weary silence on the journey home; and the exasperation of the days spent looking out of the window, waiting for the rains to pass, promising to never again under appreciate the beauty of a sunset.</text>

<text>As the UK grows increasingly hostile toward immigrants, ON THE LINE engages what Fred
Moten and Stefano Harney describe as “the refusal to be refused” (2013). From Jabalpur, India,
Tuhin Chandra portrays the lived reality of an immigrant navigating London’s unforgiving
cityscape: long hours in a fast-food restaurant alongside the urgent necessity of creation. With
limited time and resources, Chandra uses his immediate conditions as material. This is not
escapism, but an act of refusal and resilience. The photographs are produced covertly, in
defiance of company policy. Taken on the production line, they transform the prohibition of
image-making into a political gesture. Here, mustard, pickles, grease, and exhaustion converge
with questions of identity, survival, and expression. The fast-food kitchen — anonymous,
repetitive, hostile to individuality — becomes a site of clandestine creativity. The series invokes
the line both literally and metaphorically: the assembly belt of burgers and fries, the immigrant
artist on the verge of burnout, the refusal to remain confined within prescribed limits. In resisting
linearity, the work affirms the spiral of lived experience — cyclical, messy, non-linear — in which
suffering and joy remain inseparably intertwined. This is a love letter to expression when
everything else feels unlivable. It’s a reminder that even in a kitchen full of noise, grease, and
anonymity, the human spirit is still capable of saying something true - Tuhin Chandra. </text>

<text>In this book I explore the
complicated relationship cleaved
between women and wetness.
In our youth it is a boon, we are
flushed with youthful beauty, our
tears are a tool. The first red bloom
of our menses signifies transition
into womanhood. The absence of
this and the breaking of our waters;
motherhood.
The prickling sting of our milk
coming in when a baby cries
at once presents sustenance;
nurturing , comforting but it can
also be a weighty anchor.
Then all at once this wetness, that
was once an ally- a signifier of
sexuality, fertility, beauty- turns
on us. Our bodies, weakened from
childbirth, slip and leak, flush and
sweat. Eventually this wetness
abandons us altogether. As we age,
the moisture that once defined our
utility begins to betray us and we
are left with dryness in its stead.
Using sometimes abstract,
sometimes literal examples, I unpick
this shifting, complex relationship
photographically. Drawing on the
pull of the tides and the lapping,
vacillating nature of this wetness
I use the erosion of the natural
landscape as a counterpoint.</text>
