<text>FERN is Rosaline Shahnavaz’s latest exploration of the photographer- model relationship. Her book comprises a series of photographs, taken over the duration of a year, chronicling the time spent between Shahnavaz and model Fern. Over this time, both photographer and subject have progressed in life; moving city, house, beginning new relationships and growing closer to one another. Capturing those in- between moments, Shahnavaz focuses not on perfection but rather the individuality of those in front of her lens; the traits that set them apart. It is through this sensibility that Shahnavaz reveals the charm and character of her subjects. FERN renders us privy to their intimacy; as we come to the end of the photographs, we feel as though Fern is our friend too and perhaps we had been there for each of these moments.</text>

                <text>‘Omo’ means child in Yorùbá.
In 2019, Rubee Samuel self-funded a trip to Lagos to teach photography at two primary schools.
During her workshops she introduced the children to the work of established West African photographers and to the ideas behind fashion stories: styling and storytelling through photography.

With props, clothes and simple film cameras, she enabled the children to enter the fantasy world of dressing up within the grown-up conceptual world of an editorial fashion story.

Omo Nigeria is Rubee Samuel’s first book and depicts the results of her teachings: the fashion stories, concepted, styled and shot by the children themselves as well as her portrait sessions with the children.

“I believe that early exposure to the arts is vital to building the next new generation of creatives and image-makers.”

<text>The moment humankind gained the ability to define things, everything came alive. We have been constantly wrapping the world in layer upon layer of rhetoric, creating different perspectives, metaphors and interpretations of everything. Every object, everything that happens. Contemporary life is saturated with “my” truths and the falsehoods of "others".

I found myself no longer able to distinguish the voices: “are they noise I should dismiss, or are they in fact part of what makes my existence?” Doubt and unease—about where I am headed, about truth and fallacy, right and wrong—quietly take root in a world that, in the my mind, alternates between agitation and stillness.

Noise is a photobook project born from this kind of doubtness. It a visual poem that shapes and poses an open inquiry into my disorientation in the modern world. In the current period, we have too many certainties in ideas and manifestos. They’re overflowing. Through the project, I attempt to find a direction whilst being immersed in the noise of loud opinionated voices in this over-certain age.

“Must one first batter their ears, that they may learn to hear with their eyes? ”
“Must one clatter like kettledrums and penitential preachers?”
“Or do they only believe the stammerer?”

After Nietzsche hurled these questions in Thus Spoke Zarathustra the metaphors from images embedded in Noise started questioning if people can truly see the reality behind the commotion of life and how we co-exist without interfering with others. How can we become the nomad who gallops across our own existential terrain?

Or maybe, as Kant says, we are merely confined within the room of our own will, gazing at distant things-in-themselves that remain forever beyond our reach?</text>

<text>‘The Bush Monster’ is a photographically illustrated rhyming story for children inspired by both my son and nature in my garden, located in the Dutch woodland region ‘The Veluwe’. The project tells an unusual story of a bush monster who is used to hunting creatures that are different than others and chooses a wooden reindeer as his next target.
Having a child who is being raised in multiple languages by two parents who have different nationalities, for me as a mother means paying extra attention to how well the child fits into a local children’s social circle. Bullying happens across all ages, to children and adults alike. People who are bullied often feel miserable, scared, hurt and ashamed. Quite often the person being bullied suffers in silence and feels lonely. This peculiar tale, which is dedicated to my son, can serve as a starting point for a more in-depth discussion between an adult and a child, raising questions around such topics as bullying, being different, envy, empathy and forgiveness.
‘The Bush Monster’ is a conceptual continuation of the rhyming story ‘What happens to leaves when they fall off trees?’ and illustrates a story with nature photography told in an anthropomorphistic manner and with an emphasis on pareidolia, highlighting arbitrary connections in nature that lead to new meanings by combining, cutting, adjusting, rearranging, decolourising, flipping, inverting, layering and mirroring digital photographic images to achieve unusual combinations which the viewer can decipher together with the complementing textual information. The project also includes digital pinhole and reversed lens images. It all includes work from other mediums such as handmade paper, organic matter and a sound track, allowing the playfulness and experimentation to further enrich the project, and providing an opportunity for children to interact with the story by actively involving visual sense in combination with textual information and auditory and tactile senses, offering a more complex engagement.</text>

<text>'What happens to leaves when they fall off trees?' is a photographically illustrated rhyming story for children inspired by my deceased daughter and Dutch nature. The project tells the unusual story of an oak tree leaf that seeks an answer to the question ‘What happens to leaves when they fall off trees?’.

When the coldest and dreariest days of the year come, it is time for leaves to end their active life cycle and make space for the next season's leaves. Similarly, all living organisms, including humans, have a certain life cycle to follow and it is only natural for one to wonder what happens after one dies. Explaining the topic of death to children can be a particularly difficult task that should be done in a gentle manner so that children see death as a part of one's life and are encouraged to think about their deceased family members with love and respect. This unusual tale serves as a starting point for a deeper discussion between an adult and a child around the topic of life after death.

Besides digital photographic images, the project includes also work done with other photographic techniques such as a pinhole body cap on a digital camera, reverse lens on a digital camera and a cyanotype print, as well as it includes work from other mediums like handmade paper and a nature sound track, allowing the playfulness and experimentation to further enrich the project and proving an opportunity for a child to interact with the book by actively involving visual sense in combination with textual information and auditory and tactile senses, achieving a more complex engagement with the book.

This project illustrates a story with bird and nature photography told in an anthropomorphistic manner, highlighting arbitrary connections in nature that lead to new meanings by combining, layering, cutting, adjusting, rearranging, decolourising, flipping and mirroring digital photographic images to achieve unusual combinations which the viewer can decipher together with the complementing textual information. The project also includes a digital pinhole image, reversed lens image, toned cyanotype, as well as it includes work from other mediums like handmade paper, organic matter and a sound track, allowing the playfulness and experimentation to further enrich the project, and providing an opportunity for children to interact with the story by actively involving visual sense in combination with textual information and auditory and tactile senses, offering a more complex engagement.</text>

<text>Our Lockdown Garden is a photographic monograph by documentary photographer Ruth Toda-Nation, giving an insight into the lives of our most senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic year. Toda-Nation presents a series of socially distanced portraits and interviews made in collaboration with octogenarians and nonagenarians — members of the silent generation — in the garden of a sheltered retirement facility, where her father is a resident.

By fusing journalistic photography, poetic reflection, and handwritten notes from the residents themselves, Toda-Nation highlights the voices of this generation, whose invisibility was amplified during the pandemic, offering a poignant and deeply personal documentation of life during an extraordinary time.

While members of the government were disregarding COVID rules and untested patients were being sent back to care homes, many of our eldest citizens were deprived of their loved ones and died alone. Inspired by the words of Junichiro Tanizaki, “were it not for the shadows, there would be no beauty,” the book endeavours to highlight the strength and stoicism of our eldest citizens, whilst being a reminder to us all that beauty can be found in the darkest of places.

“Through this work I hope to capture a feeling of nostalgia, reminiscent of the storytelling we all love and associate with our grandparents — those special stories of wisdom and resilience that we will treasure forever. I hope the work captures the mood of this historic moment and will serve as a window back in time for future generations.”
— Ruth Toda-Nation

<text>Exhibition catalogue from the Groninger Museum on the works of Ruud van Empel (b. 1958). Van Empel has developed a unique working method within digital photography. The images he compiles display a paradisiacal world that never existed in the form shown. This world is populated by children and dreamy adolescents as a personification of innocence, which is one of the most important themes of Van Empel's work. But innocence is always vulnerable, and the longing for paradise is an all-too-human illusion that will be disturbed sooner or later. From hundreds of fragments adopted from digital photos, Van Empel compiles new images that seem very life-like and realistic, but also conjure up a world that has never existed. Essays by Deborah Klochko, Oscar van den Boogaard, and Ruud Schenk.</text>

<text>Having grown up and lived in London for the majority of my life, I wandered the streets for countless hours day after day with my camera, finding new surprises at every turn shooting the good the bad and the ugly and now i'd like to share some of that with my first book, ‘Metropolis.’

Metropolis is a 170x240mm hardback book comprising of 103 photographs. Taken between 2020 and 2024, the photographs in this book offer a candid look at everyday life in London. My aim was to document the city’s movement through its people, urban landscapes, diverse subcultures, and other hidden gems. Shot on 35mm and 120 film, with most developed and scanned by myself, these images provide a personal and intimate glimpse into London life through my lens.
