<text>As part of the 2025 Berkofsky Arts Award, Prem Dosanjh has used the awarded grant to produce a project centred around his family history that explores Glaswegian-Punjabi culture. His work looks towards a personal archive of his family history, examining both written and photographic documents and organising this material into a photobook collection of scanned images and film photographs. Prem spent time at his Nani’s house in Glasgow collecting scans of older photographs, documents and objects and taking new photographs of his Nani and mother in the city. Through recontextualising older archive material, he aims to emphasise that histories of migration do not possess a conclusive ‘end’ and instead take new forms in subsequent generations, shaping British culture.</text>

<text> Against The Grain is a visual presentation on reality and myth, on material culture and much more. The Traditions depicted herein, embedded in complex webs of cults, languages and enacted through the medium of ritual practices, are deeply rooted in science and spirituality. The ritual dimensions, born out of devotional attitudes towards a diverse host of deities, forces of nature, asceticism, life and death, society and its rejection, forms the core of this book. Here, myths, beliefs and ritual-objects are derived and reformulated from a multitude of over-lapping traditions in a seamlessly fluid relationship between material culture and what has been inscribed in the texts from within these cultures. This book, a multi-modal ethnographic undertaking, walks its audience through the myths and rites that attempt to grasp the meaning of nature and its ontological realities within our own space and time -- in realms where ordinary human beings, gods, animals, objects spirits and forces of nature communion with one another through performative ritual practices. </text>

Although very different, these two places, when bathed in specific colors, sometimes miraculously echo one another.
The other images are from previous travels that irreversibly opened up my sensibilities.
Morocco, Ecuador, California, or Brazil, evoke intimate memories and indelible encounters with people and places that remain forever engraved in my thoughts.
I have always been sensitive to the color spectrum, to sunlight beaming on architecture, as i lose myself in the beauty of it all. My poor sense of direction has often led me to visual treasures in quiet urban corners, those fringe to which i am irresistibly drawn – where the harsh reality of an inequitable world reveals itself.</text>

<text>I am Raajadharshini, a Tamil-born fashion image maker based in London.
My style revolves around treading a line artfully, between documentary, fashion and portraiture. I focus my practice on exploring fashion as a zeitgeist by capturing a variety of raw emotions, real people, communities, and human connections. What empowers my work is the strong sense of vibrant colours and energy that reflect my cultural background.
I want to create work that challenges mainstream representation in fashion - where fashion doesn’t seem very alienating to people.
In terms of fashion imagery, showcasing South Asia is still a small niche that barely has any authentic light to it. India is known for its manufacturing, and our artisanal textile skills are constantly exploited by big names in fashion. But our people are barely seen in the mainstream industry. The so-called 'Indian aesthetics' are often picked up for campaigns and models are used as tokens, but we barely see representation in the background. Very rarely are brown stories and lifestyles discussed. As the fashion world slowly evokes conversations about inclusivity and representation, My project “Koothu” celebrates my background - the people of Tamil Nadu, their lifestyle, clothing, and culture in an effort to anchor my community in contemporary visual culture and fashion imagery. -Frames of real houses and real people in Tamil Nadu that oscillate between youth, joy, leisure, and inner conflicts of characters placed against the vibrancy and chaos of the State.
•
•
“I have felt invisible quite a many times. Does everyone see me? My sister, friend, and neighbours ask me the same question. We see each other, I am not sure about the world. Representation can mean many things, for me. I grew up in Tamil Nadu, a state in India. It is hot year around, rice is our holy grail, the streets are our playgrounds, and street dogs are our confidantes. As I sit in my apartment in London, attempting to articulate the essence of my childhood to my friends from the West, I always fall short. We are from very different worlds.
The chromatic brilliance of simple frames, the chaotic energy of the place, and the most beautiful people, are the only beauty I used to know. Handmade textiles to homegrown food. My celebration and joy, the little leisure of running up to the "pori vandi", a mobile cart with fresh puffed rice and peanut, running up to the "balloon kaar", the man selling all kinds of balloons on a big board on his shoulders, vegetable vendors cycling outside my door, so many lives around me enriching mine”</text>

I’ve encountered a lot of people who assume touring is chaotic, or worse, glamorous. Most of the time it’s neither. Being on tour means being suspended between two worlds, between different versions of home. Like color, people can see the same tour differently. The word “family” gets thrown around a lot in the touring world. To me, family is dynamic, its health determined by how well the unit adapts to individual growth and change. My roles with the Death Cab ecosystem have transformed many times over the two decades I’ve been around. This band cements for me not only what family means, but family does. I’ve been so many different versions of myself with them, and they’ve welcomed me in, again and again—with a hug, a laminate, and a bunk on the bus.
—Rachel Demy

For a sales manager or a trucker, a motivational speaker or a musician, there are consistencies within the constant change of life on the road. Each learns to create homes away from home, channeling points of familiarity when, after prolonged movement from venue to venue, one’s sense of time and space inevitably dulls. Bands, like theater troupes and circuses, have a group dynamic layered on top of all that, comprised not only of the musicians but all those who contribute to the daily construction and dismantling of temporary worlds.

Photographer Rachel Demy knows every detail of what it takes to move instruments, cases and crews across the country and around the world to bring musicians and audiences together for a few precious hours. After a decade on the logistics side of managing tours, she laid down her spreadsheets and 16-channel Motorola radio to spend more time with her camera, capturing the liminal moments she had long been observing from her years on the road.

The photographs comprising Between, Everywhere were made over a five-year period touring with Death Cab for Cutie, a band she met first as a fan, and eventually joined as family. A mainstay of the indie music scene, Death Cab for Cutie has been consistently recording and touring for over two decades. Demy’s wry and poignant photographs take viewers behind the scenes and on a journey full of the quiet, the beauty, the monotony and the exhilaration of a veteran band on tour.
