Description
An account of the resource
Photographing in Calais over a period of two years, from November 2014 through December 2016, I documented refugees and migrants arriving there with the ultimate aim of reaching the UK. Several different camps in the area have served as temporary homes for countless people escaping war, torture and persecution in their home countries. The crisis is ongoing, and at this location near the narrowest part of the English Channel (separating mainland Europe from Great Britain), around 300 to 600 migrants at a time are now present in makeshift encampments.
The camps are places of in-between, where lives are suspended and disrupted while people seek protections and await bureaucratic validation in order to continue, in a legal sense. Settlements are under constant threat of being destroyed by French authorities, and violent interactions with police have created an ongoing struggle in Calais.
My aim is to challenges the perception of refugees and migrants with a view of intimate moments created after building trusting relationships – a response to a lack of awareness and intimacy that has fuelled negative stereotypes and racism.
A minimum of £1 from each copy of El Dorado sold will be donated to the charity Help Refugees. They support refugees across Europe and the Middle East by ensuring that vital humanitarian aid reaches them when they need it most. Mobilising quickly, they find local organisations doing the most effective work and give them what they need to help people fleeing war, persecution and poverty — whether it’s funding, material aid or volunteers. Golden Persimmons II by Brian Kanagaki, is a continuation of an on going documentary project spanning 6 years. The new self titled book (‘Golden Persimmons’ – a rough Japanese to English translations of ‘Kanagaki’) is a visual catalogue of his life and neighborhood shown in 3 parts. The brutalist black and white photographs depict lonely settings; vacant shop fronts, unfinished industrial scenes, empty rooms, and isolated still life’s.
Kanagaki’s laconic, no-frills approach to photography and design accurately translate his practice into art book form. The reductive style of the photographs are carefully constructed to feel like staged scenes devoid of human contact and interaction. The simplistic, graphic aesthetic lives somewhere between product photography and documentary snapshot.
Golden Persimmons II contains photographs from the last 3 years that span multiple cities; New York, London, Copenhagen, Saugerties, and Kanagaki’s hometown of Vacaville, California.

'Things Given' explores the connection between objects and memory. Of being taken to a place or time at a different point in life. A memory of a person connected to that object, kept by them, given by them. Aligning the past and present in a moment. The original project has been made into a handmade artists book with a limited edition of ten copies. This version offers a pack of non-postcards, 6 cards with 12 images in total. Each card is printed on both sides thus rendering its use as a postcard as open to question it becomes an object in its own right. The postcards are contained in a wrap with a belly band with an informational label inside.

Always is a visual diary documenting the journey of photographical artist Thai Hibbert. The visual effort was collated over a period of 3 years across europe. Always takes a spontaneous deep dive into sexuality, youth culture as well as life and death. “I wanted to create a body of work where the viewer was seeing the world through my eyes, an extremely intimate experience. I intentionally chose to take the images on non professional cameras to reflect the rawness of life and how unpredictable it can be."
The magazine is predominately comprised of black and white images with some full colour from behind the scenes. Candid moments and deeply personal insights in to the artists mind and life.
