Several hundred people worldwide are putting their faith in the promise of a future technology designed to make their death reversible. In the meantime, their bodies, or optionally just their brains, are stored in nitrogen-cooled tanks at minus 196 degrees Celsius.

For his graduation work, Janick Entremont delves into a subject as ancient as humanity itself: death and how we deal with it. In doing so, he not only documents the ambitious experiment called cryonics, but also searches for clues to the existential question raised by what it enables: what is the value of time if it does not end?</text>

                <text>The Humberston Fitties In Summer.

The plotland movement developed at the turn of the 20th century and gained pace in the interwar years as people escaped the cramped and dirty towns and cities of Britain for their own piece of paradise in the countryside or by the coast. These pieces of land were on the margins, hilly landscapes or fields thick with clay that were unprofitable to farm but could be rented out as plots where disused railways carriages could be placed or timber chalets could be constructed, adapted and used as a place of escape.

A change in planning laws in 1948 slowly brought the end of many of these plotlands through demolition, conversion to static caravan holiday parks or as they became permanent residences. A few still survive though, dotted around the country.

One of those precarious survivors is the Humberston Fitties, named after the local word for salt marsh, in North East Lincolnshire. This selection of photographs, taken between 2011 & 2021, is the second in a long term series and shows the Fitties as spring stumbles into summer, full of colour.</text>

<text>The photobook Illusions of Self is an exploratory meditation on the ways in which the self inhabits everyday spaces and things.

In the series, I used my camera and image-making to reflect on the traces of selves embedded in the untouched domesticity of my mother’s home after she died.

The work combines realist images of everyday rooms and possessions, their deterioration and eventual disappearance, with speculative photomontages that combine my own images with archival material. The photomontages reflect on the ways in which fragments of seen, unseen and hidden selves can come to inhabit us, coalescing in momentary and persistent fusions, melancholic speculations and darker agitations.

The photobook includes a number of cutouts within the pages that are intended to create fluidity within the photobook as an object as well as shifting perspectives of the images within.

Underpinning the series is my interest in the ways that image-making can be used to frame, open and narrow meaning-making together with a delight in the materiality and sculptural qualities of the photograph and photobook.

<text>This issue is part of an on-going zine that is published 2 or 3 times a year.

This issue covers the period from Winter 2020 to early Spring 2021 when Covid lockdown restrictions were in force in London, England. It is a visual expression of the emotions and yearnings felt during that time, which are expressed in text by a poem at the beginning of the zine. The images have a lyrical and dream-like feel to them, reflecting the quality of emotions and feelings and also a sense of unreality of the lockdown experience.</text>

<text>In 2020, research carried out by Royal Holloway University
of London estimated that 94,000 microplastics pass through some parts of the River Thames in London per second. The severity of this form of pollution was amplified by the United Nations who stated that 51 trillion microplastic
particles litter the worlds oceans and compared this to the scale of outer space; that this quantity is 500 times the amount of stars in our galaxy. This is problematic, as a comparative statement such as this is abstract and can subsequently perpetuate passivity, which is often the response when presented with issues of climate change and environmental catastrophe. Much like our perception of aquatic environments and outer space, the reality of these issues feel alien to us.

Using this comparison as a centralised theme, Immersion explores microplastics of the River Thames. Water from the river was collected and combined with broken-down plastics that had washed up on the foreshore and were used to replicate the process of the degradation of plastics. Film negatives of photographs of the river, taken underwater, were soaked in this combination until all emulsion was removed. The remaining film base was then scanned to produce a series of abstract images that visualise the United Nations comparison of microplastics of our planet’s oceans to the stars in our galaxy. </text>

<text>Immortal Mushroom takes its name from an Asian medicinal mushroom called lingzhi. In a explorative collaboration, photographers Samuel Bradley and Kat Chan study a remote city in northern China: Shangri-La, the most culturally and biodiverse province in the country. In the images, that are presented along Kat Chan's essays and poems as a way to thread the narrative, the artists show us stunning still life experiments created with vegetables and fruits and create a surreal vision of Shangri-La. We could say this extraordinary book offers a unique angle on a barely known but remarkable place. Bradley and Chan create a medium to explore the history and culture of Shangri-La while also challenging assumptions about Traditional Chinese Medicine.</text>

<text>IMPRINTS features a series of silver gelatin photographs created in collaboration between artists Ben K. Voss and Midge Wattles. The photographs made by Wattles depict drawings in snow and in sand made by Voss. The series began in the winter of 2018 during a residency outside of Aspen, Colorado, and has continued in the following summers along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The imagery suggests a wide range of subjects such as the naturalistic, the other-worldly, the scarring of the body and land, ancient scripts, and maps. Voss’s drawings are made intuitively with his hands, body, and materials he finds on site such as sticks, stones, shells, and water. Wattles approaches the drawings much like an explorer or archaeologist, discovering the drawings in an ever-changing, uncontrollable environment. Using the traditional darkroom process, Wattles prints the work using a variety of tones that obscure the viewer’s perception as she imagines each photograph as a unique terrain.

Their collaboration explores the relationship between the inner vision of the drawings and the physical world they inhabit as photographs. The work blurs the lines between expression and documentation, landscape and still life, and the mediums of photography and drawing. These dichotomies display a dialogue not only between the artists, but also a conversation with the planet itself. The earth is, in a sense, the third collaborator.
