<text>Immortal Mushroom takes its name from an Asian medicinal mushroom called lingzhi. In a explorative collaboration, photographers Samuel Bradley and Kat Chan study a remote city in northern China: Shangri-La, the most culturally and biodiverse province in the country. In the images, that are presented along Kat Chan's essays and poems as a way to thread the narrative, the artists show us stunning still life experiments created with vegetables and fruits and create a surreal vision of Shangri-La. We could say this extraordinary book offers a unique angle on a barely known but remarkable place. Bradley and Chan create a medium to explore the history and culture of Shangri-La while also challenging assumptions about Traditional Chinese Medicine.</text>

<text>Master – An Ainu Story provides a rare insight into the lives and culture of modern-day Ainu (an indigenous people of Japan). It has been exhibited at The Brunei Gallery, London, Sway Gallery, London and Stockholm, The ICP Museum, New York, and has appeared in National Geographic Traveler magazine.

Adam Isfendiyar is a London-based photographer, whose passion is in telling the stories of individuals and their connection to their environment. He lived in Hokkaido, Japan with Kenji Matsuda from 2016 to 2018. Through the personal experiences of Matsuda san, the photos and stories in this book tell the story of survival and adaptation of the Ainu.

Matsuda san, known as ‘Master’ (which roughly translates to ‘Boss’ in English) to his family, colleagues and patrons, has grown up sandwiched between two generations of Ainu with very different attitudes towards their heritage. While his grandparents’ generation encouraged their children and grandchildren to assimilate for fear of discrimination, recent generations have started to demand recognition of their indigenous status, which was finally given in February 2019.</text>

<text>British architectural photographer Peter M. Cook (*1967) started travelling to Tokyo in 1992, settling there in 1998. Peter has devoted himself to photographing buildings across Japan. Edo, which is the old name for Tokyo, is the culmination of twenty years tirelessly documenting Tokyo and its buildings, recording an architectural evolution of the city. For his photo book, Peter M. Cook has selected 100 images of Tokyo, paying homage to the visual language of Hiroshige's 100 Views of Edo: Mount Fuji makes an appearance, ghostlike in the background, its powerful iconic presence a reminder of a constant in nature, in contrast to the urban landscape at its base. At the same time, Cook's abstract aesthetics are reminiscent of the pioneering silent film Metropolis from 1927, which has set the scene for the futuristic city. The book furthermore includes a haiku by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma whose buildings Cook started to document for a new project.</text>

<text>Many of Magnum’s most renowned photographers, beginning with Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson on assignment in the 1930s, have photographed China, returning time and again, their fascination growing in line with China’s burgeoning accessibility and international influence. Magnum China – both an outstanding photobook and a fascinating social history – illustrates the agency’s evolving relationship with China to give a visually rich, informed photographic account of the country, its people and the changes witnessed over the last nine decades.

Chronologically organized to present key periods in the development of the modern state and its associated territories, Magnum China presents in-depth portfolios by individual photographers, accompanied by introductory commentaries on the featured projects, and group selections illustrating the diversity of Magnum’s interaction with the region. Supplemented with introductory essays by Jonathan Fenby, historical timelines, lists of photographers’ travels and a fold-out map of China, Magnum China offers detailed and insightful socio-political, geographical and historical context to complement the outstanding photography of some of the world’s finest documentary, art and street photographers.

The essence of Last Stop is that you might take the same route everyday but what you see, the ebb and flow on the street takes on a random nature, like a series of fleeting mini soap operas. The concertina book format reflects and mimics the flow of a bus journey, but more importantly it gives the viewer the opportunity to create their own journeys by spreading the book out and combining different images together. This moves the book away from an author-led linear narrative to one of multiple possibilities. </text>

<text>In 1955, Henri Cartier-Bresson published The Europeans, a collection of photographs taken over a period of five years. His portrait of the continent documented a landscape shadowed by war, where people lived among ruins and still bore the mark of hunger.

For this book, first published forty-five years later, the celebrated photographer brought together a far broader range of images, spanning the years from the late 1920s to the early 1990s. Cartier-Bresson travelled across Europe, from the Scandinavian shield to the Balkan karst, from the Breton granites to the Irish bogs, in order to capture what it means to be European. Beyond nationalism and the particular characteristics of each culture and nation, he found evidence of a greater identity, a family likeness shared by the people and the landscape.

The Europeans recorded here inhabit both city and countryside, where we see them at work, in the streets, travelling and gossiping. Sometimes they are lone figures; a photograph may show only a single gaze, a glimpse of a face. Often, however, Cartier-Bresson turns his camera to couples, twin figures, mirrored individuals, linked solitudes. He captures crowds, gathering both to celebrate and to protest. Unified by the clarity and compassion of his vision, Cartier-Bresson's photographs speak of the same daily ceremony, of the ongoing business of living for people across Europe, whether Polish priests in alb or cassock, or Abruzzi peasants shrouded in the black of their coats and hats.

With his remarkable ability to capture the fragile reality of European life, Henri Cartier-Bresson underscores his reputation as one of the twentieth century's most influential and original photographers.</text>
