<text>The 1990s saw a resurgence of the portrait genre of photography, especially in Europe, where the collapse of communism and the solidification of the European Union raised enormously important questions about national identity and shared historical and cultural values. This volume delves into this important development, featuring full-page reproductions of work by Rineke Dijkstra, Jurgen Teller, Thomas Ruff, Nikos Markou, Anders Petersen, Clare Strand, and others from dozens of countries around the continent. Taken as a whole, these portraits comprise a new genre - one that represented a break from postmodernist strategies and which allowed for experimentation and the exchange of ideas. AUTHOR: Frits Gierstberg is Professor of Photography at the Erasmus University and curator of the Nederlands FotoMuseum in Rotterdam. He has curated numerous exhibitions of contemporary photography and written extensively about the topic. Till-Holger Bolchert is Chief Curator at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, Belgium. “Today we stay younger longer and become grown up sooner. The successes of making any sort of story around youth is to recognise that we’ve all been there at sometime in our lives. <text>Over a period of three years, Michael Collins photographed the interiors of historic and live nuclear reactors and power stations across the UK. Documenting infrastructure spanning a period of seven decades, the photographs in The Nuclear Sublime depict the present state and future of Britain’s nuclear industry— usually hidden from public view.

Collins was granted unprecedented access to Dounreay, Sellafield, Chapelcross, Winfrith, Dungeness, Trawsfynydd, Sizewell A and B, Wylfa and Torness. His large-format photographs show the heart of a live reactor, the storage of nuclear waste, the control rooms and instrumentation, the process of decommissioning old sites, and the insides of fusion “Tokamak” reactors. His photographs depict both the vast scale of the austere chapel-like spaces and intricate details such as rusting control panels with wonky labels, peeling paintwork and miles of wiring. The imagery reveals the contrasts between the monumental size and heights of scientific endeavour with the reality of the sometimes dusty, and worn, outdated equipment and interiors. The images playfully capture the child-like colour palette and pipes alongside abstracted patterns and textures of the intricate infrastructure.

‘A significant proportion of Britain’s retired nuclear power stations are still standing, and because of the issues surrounding their decommissioning (dealing with the radioactive legacy and working in close proximity to it) much of the original infrastructure and equipment remain almost intact. Contrary to industry’s practice of obliterating its history before it can be monumentalised, a significant element of nuclear energy’s archaeology is still standing.’

The world’s first civil nuclear programme was established in the UK, marked by the opening of Calder Hall, Windscale in 1956. The country currently generates about 15% of its electricity from nuclear sources. It has nine operational nuclear reactors at five locations power stations, and fourteen that are no longer functioning. In July 2023, the government launched Great British Nuclear, with the aim of generating 25% of the UK’s electricity by 2050 through a combination of large nuclear plants and small modular reactors. Most existing capacity is to be retired by the end of the decade.
Michael Collins was born in India in 1961. He has lectured at Harvard, The Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths, and is Visiting Professor of Photography, University of Suffolk. His work has been exhibited internationally including at the British Museum, Barbican Art Centre, SK Stiftung, Cologne, Janet Borden Gallery, New York, RIBA Gallery and City Hall, London; Birmingham City Art Gallery; FFoto Gallery, Cardiff and Impressions Gallery, York. He has been commissioned by the Design Council and Network Rail, The Institution of Chemical Engineers, Birmingham City Council and Potteries Museum and Art Gallery amongst others. His work has been published in Frieze, Granta, Apollo, FT Weekend Magazine, The Guardian, RIBA magazine, Blueprint, Evening Standard, Source, Wallpaper*, and Le Monde amongst others. The Nuclear Sublime is his sixth book.</text>

<div class="sqs-html-content">
<p class=""><strong>I’ve encountered a lot of people who assume touring is chaotic, or worse, glamorous. Most of the time it’s neither. Being on tour means being suspended between two worlds, between different versions of home. Like color, people can see the same tour differently. The word “family” gets thrown around a lot in the touring world. To me, family is dynamic, its health determined by how well the unit adapts to individual growth and change. My roles with the Death Cab ecosystem have transformed many times over the two decades I’ve been around. This band cements for me not only what family means, but family <em>does</em>. I’ve been so many different versions of myself with them, and they’ve welcomed me in, again and again—with a hug, a laminate, and a bunk on the bus.&nbsp;
<br />—Rachel Demy<br /></strong></p>
<p class="">For a sales manager or a trucker, a motivational speaker or a musician, there are consistencies within the constant change of life on the road. Each learns to create homes away from home, channeling points of familiarity when, after prolonged movement from venue to venue, one’s sense of time and space inevitably dulls. Bands, like theater troupes and circuses, have a group dynamic layered on top of all that, comprised not only of the musicians but all those who contribute to the daily construction and dismantling of temporary worlds.</p>
<p class="">Photographer Rachel Demy knows every detail of what it takes to move instruments, cases and crews across the country and around the world to bring musicians and audiences together for a few precious hours. After a decade on the logistics side of managing tours, she laid down her spreadsheets and 16-channel Motorola radio to spend more time with her camera, capturing the liminal moments she had long been observing from her years on the road.</p>
<p class="">The photographs comprising <em>Between, Everywhere</em> were made over a five-year period touring with Death Cab for Cutie, a band she met first as a fan, and eventually joined as family. A mainstay of the indie music scene, Death Cab for Cutie has been consistently recording and touring for over two decades. Demy’s wry and poignant photographs take viewers behind the scenes and on a journey full of the quiet, the beauty, the monotony and the exhilaration of a veteran band on tour.</p>

                <text>The mesmerizing portfolio of images in the new limited-edition artbook by Yorgos Lanthimos, shot among the statues inside the Leda Gallery of Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome.
The photographer’s images depict elderly men and women whose powdered skin mimics the pallor of marble. They pose like statues or artists’ models and interact with young people wearing colourful and patterned Cruise 2020 looks by Alessandro Michele inside the Leda Gallery. Built within the Villa Albani Torlonia grounds, the Leda Gallery is home to an exceptional collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. It is named after the statue that sits at its centre, ‘Leda and the Swan’ a first-century Roman copy of an earlier Greek statue from the fourth century BC attributed to Timotheus—enhancing the value of the copy, which possesses its own authenticity. The artbook’s title, Ωοτοκία (Oviparity) also nods to the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan, as it is a zoological term meaning the production of eggs by an animal; in some versions of the story, Leda, having been seduced by Zeus in the form of a swan, lays two eggs from which two of her children are hatched.
‘Oviparity’ is be distributed by IDEA Books, the London-based independent publisher and is also be available at Gucci Garden in Florence and Gucci Wooster in New York.</text>

                <text>Robert Capa: Photographs is a major retrospective of one of the century’s greatest photographers. Drawing upon hundreds of previously unseen images, this collection reveals Capa as one of the great poets of the camera. In these photographs, we see the world through the eyes of a driven humanist who was also a documentarian of the highest caliber. While previous volumes on Capa have focused on his role as a war photographer, Robert Capa: Photographs shows us the remarkable range of his work: the sufferings as well as the tenderness, humor, and wonder of his subjects. The extraordinary book includes poignant comments by Capa’s close friend Henri Cartier-Bresson and by Cornell Capa (Robert’s younger brother and the Founding Director of the International Center of Photography), as well as a historical essay by Robert Capa biographer Richard Whelan. The dramatic collection of images in Robert Capa: Photographs shows that he captured―through the events of history―the very heart of humanity.</text>

They came home with thousands of photographs and over fifty hours of footage, resulting in two distinct pieces of collaborative work - a twenty-minute film and this photobook.
Korine’s colourful set provided a bountiful stream of wild and wacky scenarios to document, from naked extras destroying Miami mansions to Moondog (McConaughey) setting boats on fire and dancing in tinfoil underwear. The book is a compilation of photographs, video stills, written diary entries, call sheets, and vintage Florida tourist paraphernalia taped together into a scrapbook of sorts; part on-set documentary photography, part notebook of thoughts, questions and anecdotes for their film</text>
