<text>The Green Room & Science Lab, The Panther Ejaculates, Uptight Upright, Upside Down, JABBA, I'M BACK! and Cocaine and Caviar—Monster Chetwynd gives her performances playful and often off-beat titles. Her colorful, imaginative costumes and props are all handmade, and her friends, her relatives and herself make up the cast. Her performance pieces include elements of folk theatre and street spectacle as well as plenty of scientific, literary and pop cultural allusions. Humorous, informal, improvised and unconventional elements are also writ large in Monster Chetwynd’s work.

This kind of creative work generally defies any attempts to archive or eternize it. “My performances are exciting live moments that are difficult to document,” concedes Chetwynd. And yet this book seeks to do just that. “In looking at a printed survey such as this, however, the reader’s energy builds in a way that is similar to witnessing one of the live events.” And this is indeed a book about building energy, solidarity and interconnectedness.

Full to bursting with photographic documentation and source material, this book graphically retraces Monster Chetwynd’s creative years from 2007 to 2018. The photo series are framed by richly illustrated fanzines, mostly in English, covering each production, including references to sources of inspiration and cast lists.

<text>The idea was inspired by photos I took of shop-keepers in Varanasi, India years ago. I did more of that on a subsequent trip to Old Delhi under the direction of Martin Parr and when I returned to London, started to photograph shopkeepers closer to my home.

I love seeing a person in their environment, surrounded by the things they sell or make. In the case of many independent stores these things represent their passion and their livelihood. Everything they have was wrapped up in this one little shop.

In 2020 I discovered Camden Passage, a little street close to my home filled with independent shops and market traders. Each one of them has a story to tell. From there it wasn’t long before I turned my camera to the shoppers, the coffee drinks and the passersby.

After four years in the making, this project has come to represent not only this street but in many ways every High Street and community. It’s about the diverse people who shop, eat and drink on our High Streets and the local business owners who offer not just products but a sense of belonging, safeguarding the essence of community. Streets like this matter. They are the beating heart of local communities where people come together to shop, relax, catch up and support one another. They should be treasured, nurtured and supported by us and when necessary by the government. If we lose them to developers and online shopping giants we’ll lose a vital pillar of community life.</text>

<text>"This project aims to explore, in my opinion, the most challenging period of my childhood, the beginning of a new chapter: puberty and the early premise of adulthood.

It also serves to reflect the behaviour that my family and I revert to every time we return to our home: we eat the same foods, drink the same drinks, read the same books, go to the same places and superficially appear to regress back to the people we were before we left.

Yet we can never be the same people we once were.

No Man's Land is a transition, a journey through habits, identity and nostalgia, relationships and insecurity as emotional tools. The home here is a confidante that has watched us grow and blossom, a vessel bursting with memories.

Rather than working solely off of archival photographs, No Man's Land brings an element of physical performance and a sometimes painterly aesthetic to newly executed work, which seems to mirror the adolescent search for identity and self-discovery.

This project aims to question the veracity of memories and how we, as adults, have been forged by such a short period of our life more than we might think."</text>

<text>Contemporary ideals about what constitutes beauty have gradually become more homogenized due to the widespread popularity of shared digital experiences. Before the emergence of the internet, application of makeup for the majority of non-celebrity civilians was a process of untutored, organic self-experimentation. Photographer Jason Hetherington and make-up artist Mel Arter debunk the modern-day fashion industry bias towards airbrushed perfection with their collaborative insight entitled, 'Elements'. The book presents an exhilarating, uninhibited study of cosmetics, landscape and light – taking a hedonistic trip to a bygone era of analogue film photography and bold, spontaneous artistry inspired by natural, environmental forms. Celebrating the powerful relationship between human and earth, 'Elements' is an iconic ode to a time when makeup represented freedom, ritual and instinctive creativity.</text>

<text>Autofictions is the first major survey of Irish artist Trish Morrissey, charting her career from the early 2000s, and presenting new work made especially for the accompanying exhibition at the Serlachius Museums in 2022.

From her seminal photographs that interrogate the visual codes of the family album, to more recent projects exploring the lives of often overlooked women from history, Morrissey always appears in her films and photographs, sometimes performing more than one character. Autofictions explores this dual nature of her practice, whereby the artists’ own biography weaves in and out of the stories of others, using her body as a means of both re-enactment and personal reflection. Together, the works create a narrative about female experience from youth to middle age, and beyond.</text>

Paddy, with his wife Patricia, photographed these photographers - and created this little book to honour the warmth and friendship that the project generated.</text>
