The work emerged through urgency rather than planning, an instinctive, almost automatic process of trying to keep up with life. Photographs, handwritten notes, and collected fragments accumulate throughout the book, forming a loose archive of moments that resist being neatly organised. Traces of that time remain embedded in the work: diary entries, found materials, gestures of excess, alongside moments of intimacy and care. After a prolonged sense of invisibility, friendship appears as something grounding, a way of being seen again. The book moves between breakdown and rebuilding. Its structure is non-linear, folding forward and backward so that beginning and end collapse into each other, mirroring how memory loops rather than progresses. Originally conceived as a large-scale accordion installation, the project was later transformed into an intimate, handheld object. The reader is required to unfold, lift, and navigate its layers, encountering images and fragments that are at times fully exposed, others hidden. At its core, Gone & Leaving exists in an in-between state, holding the tension between leaving and becoming, without fully resolving either. Then came 9/11, further distorting western perceptions of Muslims and their faith, and the rise of far-right political groups that gained both notoriety and popularity across the UK. This ultimately intensified the polarisation between whites and Asians in areas like Pendle and Burnley. Today the area has almost 40% of children living in poverty, and communities remain divided. With little investment in resources by the UK government, local initiatives are left to try and heal the wounds that have been left unattended. Enter the Whitefield Youth Association. Founded and directed by local Hamid Khan in 2002 as a response to the riots, the initiative uses sports as a development tool for young people. They believe that every young person should have access to opportunities that will help them develop as individuals. This belief drives their charity, and inspires them to deliver real change in the area. Acclaimed fashion and portrait photographer from Pendle, Nik Hartley, captures the spirit of Whitefield Youth Association in this essay shot in spring 2022. Youthful, energetic and determined.
