every last vestige in them of belief in miracles, every breath of theirs which still inhales a perfume of fairytales reveals itself beneath the wretched,
crazed disguise of these feebly invented landscapes »

Louis Aragon, Paris Peasant

Here, not far from Paris, were marshes, which became a vegetable plain of one of the largest agricultural territories in Europe.
Between 1952 and 1972, gypsies from Andalusia settled here, as well as Roma from Eastern Europe, Portuguese, Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Yugoslavians, and a few French families, in insalubrious conditions, in what was known as the Campa slum.

Now, one seems to feel there this « feeling of nature » dear to the surrealists, and that the peasant of Aragon experienced when he walked through the park of Buttes-Chaumont, north of the concomitant capital.
Like the latter, the Parc de La Courneuve was invented and built from scratch.
Spread over five communes, it imposes its opulent landscape on the rough and dry of the Paris suburbs.
Vast plains, belvederes, mounts and pyramids: everything is aimed at re-appropriating a perspective free from the housing blocks that streak the viewer’s eyes just a few steps away, and which here can only be discerned from above, rendered minuscule by the strength of the mineral vantage points.

If there is NATURE, it is in a double language game: first, the one fenced, arranged, structured, by the landscapers and then reinterpreted by the occupants. Here, dense vegetation and stone sculptures, dark woods and clear lines, modern practices and the primitive power of trees are confronted and mixed.

Through the constitutive duality of the park, the inner strength of the beings who cross it is revealed, their nature in a second sense. An enclosed space, but a space of freedom, it creates its autonomy and its aesthetic independence at the same time by its porosity – the entrance is free – and its opacity.
In the silence of the place, contemporaneity sinks into this hybrid space as into an original reverse, creating an asynchronous picture where reality becomes fable. And then, as in the words of Aragon, “reflect faithfully the vast sentimental regions where the city dwellers wild dreams stir”.</text>

<text>Duran' is a calendar that explores the interaction between humans and nature through the subjective sensations of the authors regarding the changing seasons, the reinterpretation of familiar surroundings, and the cultural code of Belarusian tradition.

The name of the calendar comes from two words: "du", which means "two", and "ra", which means "sun", and together they form the word "duran'" meaning two suns. This does not exist in reality, but everything can be simultaneously real and fantastical, if we suppose, that what we are accustomed to is deceptive. We used to call a fool someone, who is stupid or whose opinion does not coincide with the majority, but in this context "duran'" is someone, who thinks differently, and is not necessarily wrong, but has their own perspective on things.

Therefore, the project's authors reinterpret the objective reality, using the familiar and established form of the calendar, to take a fresh look at the concept of the relationship between humans and nature.

The central character is the depersonalized human, each one of us, a part of nature that cyclically changes from month to month along with it. Not only the human is a part of nature, but all its derivatives exist inseparably, not always in harmony, but always together (the unity of the urban and the natural). In a sense, garbage has become part of this reality of nature; it is our objectivity. By incorporating garbage, we remind of its existence, and each observer is free to choose their own attitude towards it.

The concept of the unity of humans and nature is well traced in Belarusian tradition, where many significant stages of human life are connected with nature. Therefore, here you can find imitations of a goat mask for the Kalyady, the wedding attire of the bride, the Kupalle wheel, traditional headwear like the namitka and etc as yet another reminder of the deep connection between human and nature.

The book is infinite in its structure and concept, just like the changing seasons and the parallel transformations of human life. The cover is cut from a pattern of a Belarusian traditional shirt, with a tag and a hand-printed ink imitation ornament.

The project was created by two artists, Nastа Kanapelka, working in the direction of trash-plant art [author's], and Alice Gurinovich, working in the direction of contemporary photography, so the project exists at the intersection of several techniques and approaches, creating a new perspective on the issue.</text>

The resistance in this particular project is a group of plants refusing to accept that they are called weeds - or in fact myself as the photographer denies that this term is being used for something so beautiful.
The term weeds has been around in horticultural language for centuries and it has never really been questioned until recently. There is no such thing as a weed, these plants are simply being appointed this name for growing in places they shouldn’t. However, these plants should be commended for the adaptability they develop in our ever changing world and being able to grow in the most unusual places.</text>

<text>Totos Of Totopara- An Indigenous Tribe In A Globalised World is a self-published, self-designed photo-video, multimedia book:
1- Spread across 185 pages and divided into 3 sections, it gives a detailed visual insight into the daily life, rituals, culture and traditions of the Toto tribe, including birth, marriage and death.
It also traces the changes in the Indigenous Totos’ due to modernisation, globalisation and acculturation.

2- It has exclusive videos about the tribe’s rituals, language, tradition, and culture embedded in QR Codes.

3-The project is well researched: includes journalistic, academic research and oral histories. It took about 8 years to compile the documentation into a photo-video book.

4-This is the first and the only photo-video book on the Indigenous Totos.

5- Dhaniram Toto, a senior member of the Toto community has been awarded 'Padma Shri' (one of the highest Indian civilian awards) in 2023 for his commendable work to give a script to the endangered Toto language. Traditionally Toto language has been an oral one.
His work on the Toto language has already been video documented in 2015 and is a part of this book!

6- This book also has an interview of the documentary photographer, Abhijit a.k.a. Eternal Happiness™ and his wife, Priyanka AR. This interview traces the entire 7+ years of journey of this project into making this photo-video book and a detailed hour-long video, divided into 7 chapters embedded in a QR Code.

About the Totos in short:
Totos are one of the smallest Indigenous tribes in the world. They reside in Totopara, a village sitting at the foothills of Himalayas along the northern border of West Bengal in India and Bhutan.

They were once on the brink of extinction, about 350 during India’s independence in 1947 and now, their population is estimated at 1,632 (2022 Census). Their native language ‘Toto’ is one of the critically endangered languages globally as declared by UNESCO.

The Totos are now embracing different facets of globalisation, some gracefully, some due to the force of the inevitable. A tribe that is trying their best to maintain a balance between the traditional culture and the allure of assimilation with city, modernity and a globalised life.

Early collections of knowledge about the world, such as libraries and encyclopaedias also include Cabinets of Curiosities. These collections prefigured the museums of modern times, when collectors began to favour taxonomies based on science and history. The digital world, in which we can include AI, is perhaps the most recent episode in this story of ‘completist’ projects which attempt to lay out the world before us.

The Fragment Corpora seeks to expand the notion of the book into something which can be experienced in a three dimensional space. The pages of the book variously represent projections, prints, lightboxes, screens and online presentations and ultimately a large language model (LLM), currently in development.</text>
