<text>British architectural photographer Peter M. Cook (*1967) started travelling to Tokyo in 1992, settling there in 1998. Peter has devoted himself to photographing buildings across Japan. Edo, which is the old name for Tokyo, is the culmination of twenty years tirelessly documenting Tokyo and its buildings, recording an architectural evolution of the city. For his photo book, Peter M. Cook has selected 100 images of Tokyo, paying homage to the visual language of Hiroshige's 100 Views of Edo: Mount Fuji makes an appearance, ghostlike in the background, its powerful iconic presence a reminder of a constant in nature, in contrast to the urban landscape at its base. At the same time, Cook's abstract aesthetics are reminiscent of the pioneering silent film Metropolis from 1927, which has set the scene for the futuristic city. The book furthermore includes a haiku by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma whose buildings Cook started to document for a new project.</text>

<text>“Eight visits” is a collection of eight personal encounters photographed in Tokyo, Japan, during my stay there in March and April 2019. Each chapter shows one space that I visited. The starting point is coming to Tokyo as an alien and seeing only its outside perspective, my view still shaped by the imagery I associated with Japan. As time went on and I got to know more people living or working in Tokyo, I slowly developed a sense of home and with that my relationships evolved. I began to portray young adults around my age that I met and found through social media and photographed them in their homes.

When thinking back on the connection between all of the subjects, I realise that each has a fluid identity, albeit in different ways – whether that be home, nationality, or gender identity. I see the young people I got to know in Japan as part of a globalised generation, and these portraits document my experience with their expressions of identity.
The sections are not chronological, but rather references to the spaces themselves in an attempt to communicate the way I felt about each place documented.

The book closes with a conversation with one of the subjects, Tia, on Tokyo, language and gender.

<text>Photographing in Calais over a period of two years, from November 2014 through December 2016, I documented refugees and migrants arriving there with the ultimate aim of reaching the UK. Several different camps in the area have served as temporary homes for countless people escaping war, torture and persecution in their home countries. The crisis is ongoing, and at this location near the narrowest part of the English Channel (separating mainland Europe from Great Britain), around 300 to 600 migrants at a time are now present in makeshift encampments.

The camps are places of in-between, where lives are suspended and disrupted while people seek protections and await bureaucratic validation in order to continue, in a legal sense. Settlements are under constant threat of being destroyed by French authorities, and violent interactions with police have created an ongoing struggle in Calais.

My aim is to challenges the perception of refugees and migrants with a view of intimate moments created after building trusting relationships – a response to a lack of awareness and intimacy that has fuelled negative stereotypes and racism.

A minimum of £1 from each copy of El Dorado sold will be donated to the charity Help Refugees. They support refugees across Europe and the Middle East by ensuring that vital humanitarian aid reaches them when they need it most. Mobilising quickly, they find local organisations doing the most effective work and give them what they need to help people fleeing war, persecution and poverty — whether it’s funding, material aid or volunteers. Please follow our campaign and consider donating at

<text>Contemporary ideals about what constitutes beauty have gradually become more homogenized due to the widespread popularity of shared digital experiences. Before the emergence of the internet, application of makeup for the majority of non-celebrity civilians was a process of untutored, organic self-experimentation. Photographer Jason Hetherington and make-up artist Mel Arter debunk the modern-day fashion industry bias towards airbrushed perfection with their collaborative insight entitled, 'Elements'. The book presents an exhilarating, uninhibited study of cosmetics, landscape and light – taking a hedonistic trip to a bygone era of analogue film photography and bold, spontaneous artistry inspired by natural, environmental forms. Celebrating the powerful relationship between human and earth, 'Elements' is an iconic ode to a time when makeup represented freedom, ritual and instinctive creativity.</text>

<text>Elemer by Marton Perlaki describes a world of chances and combinations, revolving around the manipulation of one central figure before his camera. We do not know who Elemér is – indeed, Perlaki suggests we do not need to know – and as we witness him moving and appearing before the camera he is sculpted, both gesturally and literally. His movements, in turn, elicit the witty, hallucinatory and strange from simple still lives, landscapes and portraits made in Perlaki’s native Hungary.

Perlaki began Elemer after starting to collect cigarette cards – the disposable objects of the early 20th century that contain on one side, a household tip, and on the other, an image. He describes how ‘On first glance, the images look silly and nonsensical, but when flipped over these pictograms suddenly make sense’. This flipping of the card continues throughout Elemer – birds, bubbles, bricks, potatoes and Elemér himself are broken from their contexts, they crash and collide with one another. Within this form of bricolage – this flipping of the cards – Perlaki brings out the absurd from the factual, the delicate from the concrete.</text>
