<text>When you grow up facing the sea, the feeling of the ocean never goes away.

What impressed me the most when we settled on the Basque Coast was the light and different changes of atmosphere, which proved to be even stronger off-season. The moment when the region becomes deserted of its seasonal tourists and, as for any seaside resort, when the ambiance becomes more serene and friendly.

The emotion that came from it was so powerful that I felt compelled to transcribe it into images.

I prefer the banality of daily life to the journalistic reporting of an imposed situation. The surreal atmosphere of cities emptied of their inhabitants after the first lockdown in 2020 gave off a fake impression of stillness, which stopped me from photographing. It would have been another approach, another subject all together. So, I decided to wait for life to return to normal before the project could resurface.

Unlike a trip, where we arrive at a destination with a blank gaze; walking the streets of a familiar environment becomes a challenge.
Confronting yourself daily with the same details and atmospheres, everything can seem almost too banal to be interesting. It is precisely this challenge that interested me: the simplicity of things, the fascinating aesthetic of everyday life.

My exploration was exclusively by foot for a specific time, and I noticed that I always stayed within a 4km* radius of my home.
This ritual became a journey with imaginary boundaries, leaving free rein to intuitions and chance as I walked.

As opposed to a testimonial, my approach was to decipher a defined field in space so as to extract its essence. A sort of cartography where light and emotion were my only guides.

Unintentionally, I polarized my eternal sources of inspiration: architecture, cinema and literature; reminding me of George Perec and what he called “l’infra-ordinaire”.

Discovering characters’ attitudes from the images I just took had become a daily pleasure when I came back from a day of shooting.

APRES L ÉTÉ (After Summer) is not a project about emptiness, but rather what is around it and within it. It’s about observing a fragment of reality as I see and feel it, without the pretension of telling any other story than the one you can make yourself by looking at the photographs.

What we really see and what we discover over time, simply by observing closer.

                <text>Love, Ren Hang
Jet black hair, porcelain skin, bright red lips and fingernails; figures gazing intensely into the camera; young men and women posing acrobatically with bizarre props; animals and plants in the glaring light of the camera’s flash, situated in urban landscapes, private spaces, or in nature, among rice fields, lotus ponds, and cacti—Chinese artist Ren Hang’s photographs are painfully provocative, but also inward looking and dreamily surreal. His gender-queer compositions are explicitly erotic but never pornographic. Hang depicts the human body as an abstract form, often in idiosyncratic arrangements and perspectives, referencing and simultaneously overwriting well-known motifs and traditions from Western art. He combines iconic images of William Shakespeare’s dying Ophelia in a river surrounded by flowers; of Leda, daughter of a Greek king, and the Swan; and of female nudes seen from behind using a distinctive visual vocabulary that draws on abstraction, Surrealism, Dada, and both historic and contemporary photography. The artistic understanding revealed in his photographs is influenced by East Asian philosophy and, in contrast to Western art, does not endeavor to be original. His work instead continues a school tradition and strives for timelessness; for Hang, as for many Chinese artists, questions of authorship and of original versus copy only arise in confrontation with a Western understanding of art. The juxtaposition of these views gives rise to a new discourse on the forms and structures of collective and pictorial memory.

Ren Hang’s analog photographs use a playful, humorous visual language to relate the feelings, desires, fears, and loneliness of a young generation in China. His works stand as symbols of the youth’s rebellion against the conventions of a restrictive communist regime in which nudity and sexual freedom are subject to government censure and control even up to the present day. Most of the people portrayed are the artist’s friends, but they remain unnamed and anonymous, and the images bear neither title nor place nor date. Although carefully staged, they are infused with an element of fleetingness and evanescence that is often the result of the artist’s quick way of working. Ren Hang’s photographs are a rare ode to human beings, their bodies, sexuality, beauty, and vulnerability.

C/O Berlin will be showing the exhibition Love, Ren Hang for the first time in Germany. It is a comprehensive retrospective including over 150 recent works by Ren Hang, one of the most important contemporary photographers in China.

Ren Hang (b. 1987 in Changchun, China, d. 2017 in Beijing) was a photographer and poet. In 2010 he received the Third Annual Prize for Contemporary Art. His works have been shown in China and Europe at venues including Foam—Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, MdbK in Leipzig, Ostlicht—Galerie für Fotografie in Vienna (2017), and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris (2019). He produced numerous photobooks and published his photographs on his website, Facebook, Instagram, and Flickr. His work has gained a growing posthumous following and immense popularity worldwide. Up to his death by suicide at the age of twenty-nine, Hang lived and worked in Beijing.</text>

<text>Back to Back: From Backyard to Boulevard shines a light on the lowrider culture of Los Angeles, CA. Originating in the mid 20th century, highly anticipated social events began to flourish on Whittier Boulevard in East L.A., where cars featuring extended bodies and low to the road are proudly put on display. Back to Back: From Backyard to Boulevard is the result of De Block's four-year journey back and forth to the slums of Los Angeles to visualize the lowrider culture that has fascinated him since childhood. As an outsider, he created intimate portraits of a community often associated with stereotypes and prejudices. “I can vividly remember the first lowrider event I attended in Los Angeles. I had driven out on a Sunday in October 2018 to attend an event called Sunday Funday. The concept is self-explanatory: Everybody comes together to have fun on Sunday, without any bullshit, with a common love for lowriders ... When I first showed up in the early afternoon, there weren’t many people out. But within one hour, the whole place was packed with barbecue vendors and people selling t-shirts and merchandise. I feel like there was 500 to 800 people there that day. And for me it was like ‘Wow, all the things that I’ve been interested in my whole life—L.A. culture, architecture, cars and rap music — all come together in one place here’ ... Back to Back: From Backyard to Boulevard represents the process of starting on your first car in your backyard, then bringing it to a body shop, where it will spend months being customized, to when you show it on the boulevard and share its beauty with family and friends ... I pursue Back to Back to celebrate the lowrider as a muse and to accurately represent the people behind it”.
