<text>After attending a cosplay convention in 2017, photographer Thurstan Redding became captivated by cosplay as a subject matter and embarked on a three-year photographic project to portray cosplay in a way it had never been seen before. Brought to life through the presentation of seventy cosplayers in unassuming locations, Kids of Cosplay highlights how creativity can thrive in the most mundane realities: Spider-Man is illuminated by the open fridge in a kitchen, three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland, a Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing complex. Supplemented by commentary from the cosplayers themselves, together with behind-the-scenes pages from Thurstan’s personal diary, Kids of Cosplay “celebrates the unique community spirit that exists within this charming—and, the more you look, surprisingly moving—parallel universe of glorious, generous pageantry” (Vogue).

A foreword by fashion powerhouse Katie Grand; an essay by writer and performer Tom Rasmussen, who discusses the social and cultural context of cosplay; and an illuminating interview with Redding by noted fashion writer Sara McAlpine complete Kids of Cosplay. Sometimes, you only have to scratch the surface of our reality to reveal the fantasy that lies beneath.</text>

                <text>In the beginning was thought.

I AM is the moment when the first thought or state of consciousness arises. A vortex-like existence where the maelstrom of thoughts slowly gives birth to a new world. I AM can be triggered by a life crisis, an experience, or a vision, yet it undoubtedly broadens our understanding of the multiple dimensions of our existence.

I AM is an artistic photo essay that tells my own story. In my world, we inhabit a nondual existence where traditional binaries such as good and evil, dark and light, masculine and feminine do not stand in opposition to each other, but constitute natural and complementary parts of us all. We harbour respect for every living being and understand our task in the eternal cycle of life.

I have been inspired by the Neolithic cultures of south-eastern Europe, where a genuine and direct relationship with nature permeated everyday life. The holy cycle of life – birth, death and resurrection – were metaphysical experiences that were rendered intelligible in the shape of Mother Earth, the origin and goal of everything. It was a time when equality existed, before humans began to create gods in accordance with their own interests and to their own advantage. Whether it is merely a myth is less important. This depiction of primeval society has not only served as an inspiration, but it increasingly appears will determine the conditions for our future. As evidence for this society’s existence take, for example, the words mother and sea, which are more or less interchangeable in most primeval cultures. Mara – Mare, the origin of everything – the goal of everything. The water of life – the water of the womb. The sea of infinity.

The dramaturgy of this wordless narrative originates from the story of creation. A story which in its basic elements almost without exception is depicted in similar ways in cultures across the world: the origin of the world, the birth of humankind, the fall and rebirth. I have chosen to let the various sources blend to form a unitary experience centred on nature and Mother Earth, rather than depicting literal scenes. With these images, I have aimed to convey a sacred mood letting awe, mystery and various levels of consciousness guide how they’ve come into existence. The images are not a depiction of an external reality, but serve as a medium to convey an inner experience, a way to our collective human subconscious gathered piece by piece over millions of years.

I have searched for the likeness of the human figure and symbols in nature, and vice versa. I’ve sought for nature’s shapes inscribed in the human body in order to clarify and emphasise the unity and interdependence of everything. Hence nature becomes an internal experience instead of an external phenomenon. Here we will likewise find the ruthless rampage of evil forces, with Mother Earth biding her time, shackled but indestructible. For the resurrection of Mother Earth and life alike, death and destruction of the past is inevitable.

<text>Tucked away behind the veil of minimalistic design, bicycles and new nordic cuisine is the real Scandinavia: a land reminiscent of the American midwest for its rolling hills and forests, a tight knit community with family values at its core — and explosive internal combustion engines.
At first glance, the book presents an unbridled celebration of the sport by capturing the excitement and beauty of the world of super street Drag Racing. It showcases the drivers, audience, and colourful cars through a nostalgic lens, alongside abstract black and white macro photographs of the track’s rubber- covered surface. These macro photographs create an eerie and unsettling scenery that looks like aerial photographs of post- apocalyptic landscapes.
Malmö Raceway is both a celebration of the internal combustion engine and an uncommon portrayal of Scandinavian society.</text>

<text>In the past years, South Korea has gained significant global exposure, and its fast‑paced technological development has drawn a lot of attention from everyone around the world.
The "Fearless Flowers" series explores gender, sexuality, gaze, and identity in South Korea. The project, photographed over two years with 23 different participants, studies one's relationship with their own body and inner struggle with the image pressured by a conservative society, where certain beliefs and outdated standards are forces on the rapidly changing nation.
Adorned with flowers, the human body represents universal innocence, timelessness, and purity. The subject, who may convey toughness in other settings, is shown with vulnerability and humanity when photographed in a safe studio environment. Ornamented with flowers, the black garment, which represents the society uniform, is a metaphor for the fight and struggle of each subject and beyond.
The series is an attempt to capture open-mindedness: acceptance of your body and sexuality, as well as welcoming the self-created modern image of who Korean people aspire to truly be. It is creativity's role to rebel its spirit against society's preconceived ideas and question their relevance.
As an outsider, I've had the privilege to be introduced inside this personal expression of liberation, looking for meaning, looking at the beauty and identity, all while capturing the landscape of self-invented people: a true walking work of art."

                <text>Quinn (2014-2020)
This is the fictional story of a young man, William Henry Quinn, who is walking from the south-west of England to the far north of Scotland in post Second World War Britain.
Although fictional, the work is in response to the real experiences of young men and women post-trauma, both in the early twentieth century and now. The life changes imposed on each generation by conflict and global socio-economic collapse as well personal tragedy produces a constant stream of people left untethered, travelling in any way they can to find a new home, a new purpose and to rebuild their place in the world.
As we follow Quinn on his odyssey, we travel with him on a physical and metaphorical journey mediated by the British landscape, which is both changed and unchanged since the 1940s. The ancient byways along which he and others have travelled remain as they were then, and yet with the immutability of change and the unremitting nature of time passing, lives and memories change and fade. As we walk alongside Quinn and learn his story, we may perhaps come to understand more about our own search for existential meaning, and ponder our own purpose in life.
The work consists of large-format photographs, moving image pieces, ephemera and text vignettes, created to be viewed and read side-by-side, to take the viewer through a multi-dimensional experience; much like reading a novel, visiting the theatre, and going to the cinema at the same time. Quinn is a meditation on grief, loss, loneliness, the human search for meaning, and the possibility of redemption through time and landscape.</text>

<text>In 2001, race riots swept across northern towns and cities, furthering the rift between white and Asian communities. Then came 9/11, further distorting western perceptions of Muslims and their faith, and the rise of far-right political groups that gained both notoriety and popularity across the UK. This ultimately intensified the polarisation between whites and Asians in areas like Pendle and Burnley.

Today the area has almost 40% of children living in poverty, and communities remain divided. With little investment in resources by the UK government, local initiatives are left to try and heal the wounds that have been left unattended.

Enter the Whitefield Youth Association. Founded and directed by local Hamid Khan in 2002 as a response to the riots, the initiative uses sports as a development tool for young people. They believe that every young person should have access to opportunities that will help them develop as individuals. This belief drives their charity, and inspires them to deliver real change in the area.

Acclaimed fashion and portrait photographer from Pendle, Nik Hartley, captures the spirit of Whitefield Youth Association in this essay shot in spring 2022. Youthful, energetic and determined.

<text>EVERYDAY THINGS WHITE CITY GENERATIONS 88-97 is a photobook that attempts to answer two pivotal questions; what is the everyday and what our are our everyday things? This photobook is compromised by a series of photographs made with a familial group of young Black adults living in White City, Shepherd's Bush, West London. It also features archival records which reveal White City's past as a former imperial and colonial exhibitions grounds, and its more recent histories as an interwar utopian council estate. Throughout the photobook, annotative reflections exploring what it was like to grow up in and live the area, are shared by the familial group alongside their perceptions of White City’s historical and contemporary representations. Fundamentally this photobook also serves as means of paying homage West London situated notions of Black experiences and Black joy.
