<text>Ideas around place and identity have never been unequivocal for Anu Kumar. When the young Melbourne-based photographer returned to to her birthplace of Kavi Nagar, India, for the first time since childhood at age twenty-one, she felt at sea. ‘I remember a feeling of discomfort, of not knowing my place or who I was in that context,’ she says. ‘I began taking photos as an exercise in learning how to be Indian.’

The term Ghar, meaning ‘home’ in Hindi, doubles as the title of this, her debut book, and the broader outcome of her pursuit – one that is as much a new beginning as it is a homecoming. Shooting over a period of five years on a medium format camera, Kumar’s soft gaze meanders between the rooms and courtyards of the family home in Kavi Nagar, and out onto the neighbouring streets, sketching out the symbolic and aesthetic markers of a personal and cultural heritage. Formal portraits of her grandmother, aunts and uncles, echoing the traditional family album, give way to intimate scenes of daily tasks and quiet idleness – a thorough visual record to preserve intergenerational gestures and familial rituals that may otherwise linger in the undocumented everyday.

Kumar’s search for familial closeness was suddenly given a new sense of universality when the COVID-19 pandemic closed Australia’s international borders for almost two years. Edited and sequenced during this period, Ghar also speaks to the enforced distance experienced by cross-cultural families, and the role of photographs as vessels for intimacy and connection. The series contemplates ‘home’ in all its multiplicities. A place, a sentiment, a responsibility; something at once inherently familiar and other times distant and incongruous.</text>

<text>Parallax view is a build-up of 33 photographs made between 2017 and 2022 in the United States, Hungary, China, and Ecuador. In this sequence, I’m focusing on private and public scenes from a single point of view, shifting the focus from my domestic partnership to everyday life.

While seeking order and meaning in the ordinary randomness, I slowly realized what became the driving force is what’s the work’s about; it’s the object cause of desire. In Lacan’s theory ( objet petit a ) the object is not something we have lost. It is not a specific object but the “object” that derives from our personal history of desire. It’s the constant sense we have as humans, the feeling that something is lacking or missing from our lives.” The sequence was not to be a podium for an essay-like argument or statement. In opposition to permanence, it is rather a discontinuous assemblage of possibilities.</text>

<text>This series was made during the quiet in-between moments from March 2020 until December 2021. The book contains a collection of daytime collages and nocturnal poems: Images of sunlight and clouds caught in interiors are put next to rhymes I had written in sleepless nights.

In the collages, I combined analog photographs of skies I had taking during previous travels with digital photographs I shot inside. The home thus turns into an ambiguous space in which everything starts to merge: inside and outside, reality and dream, virtual and physical, day and night.</text>

<text>Opencast coal mining has led to the destruction of hundreds of German villages over the last century. Although Germany has promised to phase out coal by 2038, extraction continues and the future of several villages hangs in the balance. Combining Alan Gignoux’s photographs of abandoned houses and Chloe Juno’s images of the personal belongings left behind by departing families, Monuments documents and commemorates communities in North-Rhine Westphalia earmarked for demolition.

The two photographers take different approaches to highlighting the erasure of shared history and collective memory. Gignoux’s images document the destruction of houses, gardens, schools, shops, churches, businesses, roads, the infrastructure of entire communities, while Juno’s photographs show us personal objects that recall individual lives.

Designed by Chloe Juno and Emily Macaulay, the spiral-bound book features Gignoux’s landscape photographs presented as generous spreads with Juno’s objects photographs overlaid as inserts of varying sizes. The book includes archival material, including a found German household goods catalogue and Google images showing the creeping expansion of the surface mines.

Monuments comes with two stickers printed with slogans protesting against the mines and a Christmas card with an image of a Christmas stocking taken by Juno as she was walking around the condemned village of Keyenburg.</text>

<text>At the end of 2011, Peruvian national news broke a story about a series of barbaric murders that took place deep in the Peruvian Amazon in a region called Balsapuerto, home to the indigenous Shawi. In a period of just ten months, 14 traditional Shawi healers (or ‘curanderos’, as they are known locally) were reported to have become victims of a wave of brutal killings. According to local reports, the suspected orchestator behind these murders was Balsapuerto’s acting Mayor at the time, Alfredo Torres Rucoba. Accused of carrying out a politically motivated campaign of witch killings he, and his brother Augusto, earnt themselves that local nickname ‘Los Matabrujos’. The Banished of Balsapuerto is an ongoing investigation into these deaths and the theories behind them, using a mix of on-location interviews, previously unreleased police and court materials, excerpts from local press coverage as well as original photographs and illustrations and in-depth writing.

"Witch Hunt Vol. I: The Banished of Balsapuerto" was shortlisted for the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles (2020), the Images Vevey Book Award (2021) and the MACK First Book Award (2021) among others.</text>

<text>In 2010 David Monahan invited people emigrating from Dublin to participate in his Leaving Dublin project. Its success in articulating the feelings of the everyday losses and gains associated with emigration has led to the work being locally and internationally recognised. It is a significant artistic contribution to the conversation around the current wave of emigration from Ireland.

While shooting the series, Monahan developed relationships with his sitters which led him to further investigate the places they had left behind and the places they now inhabit. This investigation comes together now for the first time in book form under the title of On Leaving.

On Leaving features over 150 photographs in 3 series – Empty Spaces: Desolate dawn landscapes of locations sacred to the participants of the works; Leaving Dublin: a series of highly stylised night time portraits of single people, couples and families on the cusp of a major life changing move; and Visitation: a series of photographs made during visits to participants in their new homes.
