<text>JPN Journal is a photographic project by photographer Karim Skalli exploring Japan through the eyes of an outsider living in the country during one of the most turbulent few years of our lives. Looking for simple beauty and moments of silence that dwell in everyday life. In recent years, Japan has become one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, welcoming over 30 million tourists In 2019 alone. Due to the impact of coronavirus, the number of visitors in 2020 decreased by 97.7% from the previous year to only 58,000. I felt it was important to record this moment in time, a time like no other, and create a journal of my experience living and observing a country so different from my own. I’m so grateful I got to experience it here in Japan, a place like no other.

<text>During the Covid 19 lockdowns, London's climbing community found itself stranded.
For many people, climbing is a way of life, a culture, a religion, an escape, a way to vent or shut off for a while. Losing this during such a testing time was terrible.
The boulder on Mabley Green, installed by John Frankland in 2008 as a sculpture and site for climbing, became a beacon for those people, myself included.
It brought us together, introduced us to others, gave us somewhere to escape to and forget about the world that, at times, felt like it was falling apart around us.

This book is a visual document of that period of the London climbing community, and also tells my story of becoming part of it</text>

<text>Frank Watson’s latest book, Rollercoasting (published, June 2022) contains 40 colour photographic images and an introductory essay that explores the Kent coast as a frontier between England and Europe. The coastline fluctuates between the flatlands of Thanet and Dungeness and the undulating chalk hills and cliffs of the North Downs. The photographs allude to the way certain sites are historically respected whilst other places remain quiet and overlooked. The images attempt to portray a coastline that is shaped by both respect and contempt, where the natural and the industrial are often at odds with one another.
However the images also emphasize the pleasures of the often unwitting and eccentric quirkiness of human intervention.

<text>SILVERTOWN explores the psycho-geography of an extensive and spectacular ruin which once occupied over 500 acres of the north bank of the River Thames. Part narrative, part prose-poem, the text explores the passage of time through the complete disappearance of a site which once accommodated one of the engines of the colonial project. Badly damaged during the War, the site became a film location before its eventual re-invention as a retail park. The images, which span over 25 years, are accompanied by a text which references Borges, Starobinski, Calvino and Satre, who assist in transforming an aggregation of images and themes into a place that now exists only as an imaginary landscape, through which history and fantasy can be re-ignited at will.</text>

<text>Nisanth Srinivasan is a young visual artist based in Bangalore, India who has never used a stills camera and film to make photographs. These include re-photographing found images and scanning the pages of old books and magazines. Why does a contemporary image-maker foreground this strategy in their practice?

The accompanying essay by Allan Parker considers some answers to this question and explores how digital technologies fall short in what they offer to the image-makers of today.</text>

— Emily Graham

In 1993 an author buried a golden sculpture— the Chouette d’Or (Golden Owl)—and released a book with eleven allusive clues as to its whereabouts somewhere in France. Nearly 30 years later, many continue to search for the treasure which remains unfound. Over a period of three years, artist Emily Graham, photographed those pursuing the treasure in their potentially futile quest, whilst collecting research and ephemera. The resulting images, combined with documentation on the search—texts, correspondence and maps— form her new book The Blindest Man.

The clues as to the whereabouts of the Chouette d’Or comprise of text and paintings and have lead a large number of searchers across the landscape of France. The game was designed to last two or maybe three years and searching for the treasure became a common pastime in France. The author—who was originally anonymous—is now dead, and only the truly committed continue to search against a tide of rumour, misinformation and re-herrings clouding their investigations. Scientists, doctors, retirees, and artists all continue with elaborate calculations and theories as to the location of the cache. Each have their own “zone” in which they scan the landscape, drawing conclusions from snapped branches, the contours of maps, and shadows crossing the land. Some are inspired to continue for challenge of code breaking, others for philosophical reflection, an adventure or a way of experiencing and seeing, a lens through which to look.</text>

<text>Portrait A Day is a project by photographer Rory Langdon-Down, who set out in 2021 to document a year like no other by focussing on honesty, positivity and authentic connection.

These 365 portraits, and the dialogue that surrounds them, reveal the story of this unique year. One that comprised of lockdowns, vaccinations, freedoms returning, delayed events, love, loss and all the many stories that make us human.

This coffee table book features all 365 portraits from the project and over 40,000 words detailing the year through the stories of the people featured.

The book's foreword is written by photographer Martin Salter - https://martinsalterphoto.com/.</text>
