<text>Live at Wembley 21 is a collection of photos taken at both the semi-finals and final of the Euros at Wembley. This zine shows the contradiction between the empty stadiums of the photobook LFF 20/21 to one of the biggest events that can happen in the world of football, a semifinal and final of a Euro, all in the same city of London. It is interesting to see the contrast between the early empty and silent stadiums to the later occupied ones, which once again buzz with anticipation. Wembley was the first large-scale event after the pandemic and I wanted to document the explosion of emotions.

The project has been shot on film to invoke feelings of nostalgia from a bygone era and it is my belief that film is the only medium that can truly capture the raw passion of the 12th Man, the crowd. The spirit of Football lies in the fact that it is for everyone. </text>

<text>While they were staying in New Zealand in 2018, French visual artist Louis Gary and his family were invited to his friend Alan’s wedding in South Korea. In parallel to his sculpture and drawing practice, Louis had recently started taking photos again with an old large format camera. He was able to shoot pictures prolifically thanks to a cheap stock of black and white medical film that is normally used for radiography.
Whereas most photographers look for an excuse to not be their friend’s wedding photographer, Louis deals with the matter in his own tender and lopsided fashion, creating the chronicle of his friend’s intercultural wedding and of his family’s first South Korean experience.
The photos were put away in a box and forgotten for four years, until South Korea-based publisher Same Dust proposed to edit them and to make a simple and elegant book out of them.
BONJOUR ALAN is Same Dust’s first publication. It was launched at LE BAL Books in Paris in February 2022. The first 100 copies of the book are signed by the artist and a limited series of risograph prints produced by Same Dust are equally available to purchase.</text>

<text>Cringe Magazine is an independent publication exploring shame and self-consciousness through writing and art.

In our third round of interrogating cringe, like the discomfort that being perceived by others brings us, and the self-consciousness that comes with perceiving ourselves, we wanted to focus on the awkwardness of molding our ever-changing bodies to time and space.

But instead of looking at metaphysical spaces alone, long-time contributor Christopher reflects on the generational tension he encounters on the tennis court and discovers the virtue of occupying spaces for a seemingly pointless round of sports, while Stella discusses the constant tension between body positivity and society’s submission to the trend cycle. We also reflect on the tense and tender space of human relationships, not to forget the relationship we have with ourselves.

Just like in previous issues, this edition is full of thoughtful poetry and art submissions exploring the (ab)used body, self-consciousness exhibited through the lens of an unknown photographer, and the curse of the perfectionist who wants to be seen by others while at the same time hiding from their judgement.</text>

<text>American Mirror is award-winning photographer Philip Montgomery’s dramatic chronicle of the United States at a time of profound change. Through his intimate and powerful reporting and a signature black-and-white style, Montgomery reveals the fault lines in American society, from police violence and the opioid addiction crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic and the demonstrations in support of Black lives. Yet in his unflinching images, we also see moments of grace and sacrifice, glimmers of solidarity and tireless advocates for democracy. Like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans before him, Montgomery has made an unforgettable testament of a nation at a crossroads.</text>

<text>This is a book of photography and text from 2015 and 2016, and there are four deconstructions within it.

The first deconstruction is of my father’s physical being. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was undergoing rigorous chemotherapy treatments. Whilst dealing with the intensity of these, his arms and hands began freezing. He was a carpenter and he was struggling to hammer, cut and plane. It agitated him. A specialist diagnosed him as having Parkinson’s Disease. A diagnosis he found even more brutal than the cancer. He lost confidence in his work and the freezing episodes put him at risk of losing his driving license.

‘Deconstruction’ in the building trade means to dismantle something so that the individual elements are kept for reuse, rather than discarded.

The second deconstruction in the book is my own. My father was my absolute hero. I was in despair. I was in pieces during this period. I sought solace in masochism and excess because I couldn’t face the pain of seeing my father die. I saw death and religious iconography everywhere.

The text my father wrote over the course of his death is a third deconstruction. The hospital suggested he kept a medical journal of his day-to-day dealing with illness. It’s him breaking down the experience in forced, painful diaristic accounts of his body shutting down.

The last deconstruction is the photography. With each hand printed photographic exposure, with each chance to catch the essence of something that was being pulled away from me, I wanted tangibility and texture. The drapes thrown over the chairs in the living room. His workman’s yard – the metal and the rust. The nuts and bolts of a life falling apart.

Around the time leading up to the death was my frenzied expression and plea for help in 2016. I often met people away from home in an enclosed private setting.

The world was muddy, and I was nihilistic. The process soothed me as I searched for meaning.

It was the first time in my life I had witnessed death. I was in denial for a long time, simply not believing the day would ever come. Then before you know it, the wind is taken from my sails. It was about the early morning when the fatal time came. The ambulance arrived, Dad got rushed into hospital in a frenzied climax in the last moments. I got to say goodbye, hold his hand and be close to him.

Grieving is a long slow process and at the very beginning, it is all-encompassing. As you evolve, the aftermath gets easier and I began fixing myself up. Seeking help and letting incredible people into my life.

A year later when tidying things away I found a bloody tissue in Dad's dressing gown pocket. I kept it stored away in a 35mm film cassette. It moved with me from home to home. As a way of holding on. I had it photographed forensically in a science lab. I wanted to find him metaphorically in another world. In search of awe. An essence of his existence in an abstract form. I photographed relentlessly, the otherwise tiny tissue came to life with fragments of his DNA magnified quite beautifully under the lens.

When Someone is dying and you count down to someone's last breath. To see the colour drain from the face of a loved one, to see the body still and calm after so much wretched pain and suffering, that's powerful. The silence lingers.

I can't accept that there isn't something greater out there after death. I parted with my Dad's tissue. I placed it carefully in a whisky bottle and set it out to sea. I wanted to close this chapter on my life and set the memory free.</text>

The 11th Carmignac Photojournalism Award — which focuses on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — was awarded to British-Canadian photographer Finbarr O’Reilly. His reportage started in January 2020, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the swiftly worsening global health situation and the gradual closing of international borders, Finbarr O’Reilly and the Award team—in close collaboration with the jury of the 11th edition— reframed their approach and launched ‘Congo in Conversation’, a collaborative reportage produced in conjunction with Congolese photographers and journalists, which was published in a monograph and exhibited internationally.

As the borders reopened, O’Reilly resumed his reportage in the DRC. The Fondation Carmignac is honored to present his work in a new monograph ‘Congo, A Sublime Struggle’, titled after a quote from Patrice Lumumba’s independence speech.

The book examines the central themes of security and human rights in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo while exploring links to the environment and climate crisis, the country’s colonial history, and how ongoing exploitation by extractive industries affects the lives of the Congolese.</text>

<text>105 photographs of artists' hands. Hands are as expressive and as individual as faces, and are essential tools of almost all artists. Cally Trench met up with a diverse selection of artists at their studio or house, or at an exhibition or other event, and photographed their hands - sometimes one hand, sometimes both, usually in consultation with the artist about poses, props and backgrounds. The artists were all invited to write a short piece about their hands, lives and work, and these are printed under the photograph of their hands, creating a kind of dialogue between the artist and the photographer. The book also contains approximately 30 stand-alone hands-related pieces - essays, poems, stories, and visual projects by some of the artists photographed. </text>

<text> Against The Grain is a visual presentation on reality and myth, on material culture and much more. The Traditions depicted herein, embedded in complex webs of cults, languages and enacted through the medium of ritual practices, are deeply rooted in science and spirituality. The ritual dimensions, born out of devotional attitudes towards a diverse host of deities, forces of nature, asceticism, life and death, society and its rejection, forms the core of this book. Here, myths, beliefs and ritual-objects are derived and reformulated from a multitude of over-lapping traditions in a seamlessly fluid relationship between material culture and what has been inscribed in the texts from within these cultures. This book, a multi-modal ethnographic undertaking, walks its audience through the myths and rites that attempt to grasp the meaning of nature and its ontological realities within our own space and time -- in realms where ordinary human beings, gods, animals, objects spirits and forces of nature communion with one another through performative ritual practices. </text>
