I will be specifically looking at the Olympic Gardens, a small town in Jamaica where my family and I originated. Olympic Gardens is a western suburb of Kingston, located between the Blue Mountains and Caribbean Sea near the seaport. The participants in this project, many of whom are friends and family members, were mostly photographed on Tower Avenue, a main road in the Olympic Gardens. This gave me a substantial group of people to photograph. I noticed that a drinking culture has developed in the Olympic Gardens, which is not how I remember the community being when I was younger. There now seems to be several bars scattered around the area. I took photos of many of these places, such as the popular ‘Angela’s Bar’. Historically, this work is perceived as naturally "feminine" which encourages a false biological destiny for women in which appreciation or "love"-rather than wages or money- is meant to serve as its own reward for the work. However, this project looks at housework as more than just housework. It is the unwaged servicing of waged workers emotionally, physically, mentally, and sexually. Without this work, no other work would be possible, and it should be formally recognized. This project consists of quotes and images from interviews with 19 women across Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India and archival photos, capturing the everyday lives of women. Inspired by the International Wages for Housework movement, started by feminists of the 1970s, Mai Ni Meriye sought to understand housework from women at the grassroots level and humanize the subject. The larger goal of the project is to galvanize interest in the "labor of love" from small village discussions over tea to mainstream platforms with influential voices--all in service of a new perspective on women and housework. Everyday details—foliage, power lines, streets, animals—transform into dreamlike fields of visions when the gaze lingers a little longer. Nothing is entirely new, yet nothing looks familiar anymore. My images arise from chance and stillness—light, shadow, and color. I use flashes, color gels, and long exposures to shift the ordinary into something otherworldly. They are not digital fabrications, though they often resemble AI-generated imagery. Instead, they are created in the moment, in the union of camera and gaze, revealing another reality beneath the surface of the everyday. In the past, sacredness lived in nature. In pagan beliefs, forests, lakes, and stones were full of spirits and signs. Today, we search for the same sense of mystery through technology—through screens, algorithms, and virtual promises—while the world around us fades from view. Years ago, a psychotic episode reshaped my perception—the everyday began to rearrange itself, appearing as signs and messages. Although this project no longer directly addresses that experience, its trace runs through everything I create. My photographs are a reminder that something is still here, waiting for us if we allow ourselves to linger. Everything around us carries stories we have forgotten—but which can still be seen, if only we look differently.
