<text>Udmurtya is the region with one of the highest rates of suicides amongst males in Russia.
Mostly udmurts hang themselves in the woods. There are several reasons for that. One of them is sheltered in the cultural traditions of the nation. Udmurts are shamanists, inseparability connected to the nature, which is
the essential part of their religion and rituals.
I was interested in concentrating to the portraits of widows, their stories and the images of the nature – probable places of self-murders, but not always. Through it the spectator can imagine how the nature influence on udmurts.
I inclined to consider suicide as a manifestation of these powerful chthonic presence of archaic energy, which still lives in the remote Udmurtia.
I wanted to capture natural failure, a fatal failure, the hole in which other forces live, pulling the young and full of strength men inside.</text>

<text>As the UK grows increasingly hostile toward immigrants, ON THE LINE engages what Fred
Moten and Stefano Harney describe as “the refusal to be refused” (2013). From Jabalpur, India,
Tuhin Chandra portrays the lived reality of an immigrant navigating London’s unforgiving
cityscape: long hours in a fast-food restaurant alongside the urgent necessity of creation. With
limited time and resources, Chandra uses his immediate conditions as material. This is not
escapism, but an act of refusal and resilience. The photographs are produced covertly, in
defiance of company policy. Taken on the production line, they transform the prohibition of
image-making into a political gesture. Here, mustard, pickles, grease, and exhaustion converge
with questions of identity, survival, and expression. The fast-food kitchen — anonymous,
repetitive, hostile to individuality — becomes a site of clandestine creativity. The series invokes
the line both literally and metaphorically: the assembly belt of burgers and fries, the immigrant
artist on the verge of burnout, the refusal to remain confined within prescribed limits. In resisting
linearity, the work affirms the spiral of lived experience — cyclical, messy, non-linear — in which
suffering and joy remain inseparably intertwined. This is a love letter to expression when
everything else feels unlivable. It’s a reminder that even in a kitchen full of noise, grease, and
anonymity, the human spirit is still capable of saying something true - Tuhin Chandra. </text>

<text>Francesca Allen’s Konkursas depicts participants in Lithuania’s Konkursas Pasaulio Ilgaplaukės annual competition for the world’s longest hair. Here hundreds of girls and women with thousands of feet of hair walk the runway and have their lovingly groomed hair measured by gloved judges, before shaking it in a ceremonial finale. Allen’s fascination with ritual and coming-of-age sparked her interest in the contest, one which blends pageantry with folklore and allows the artist to deepen her thoughts on hair within femininity: “Hair influences how we are perceived by others, how professional we appear, our identity, our religion and culture. It plays a huge role in the enactment of self and also our discrimination against others.” The resulting photographs—haunting, funny, slightly surreal—explore the dichotomy between modernity and tradition, obsession and aspiration, and ideas of girl- and womanhood.

This book is the first of many to be printed and published by Steidl in collaboration with Chloé Arts, an initiative driven under the creative direction of Chemena Kamali, embracing Chloé’s legacy of female creativity. Its mission is to celebrate outstanding female talent, nurture emerging artists, and create unexpected interdisciplinary conversations across different fields of the arts.

<text>Night is a special time. Many spend it at home, in front of the TV or smartphone screen, but not everyone. Public transport drivers and doctors also work at night, some engage in nighttime sports, others return home from gatherings, and lovers stroll embracing each other. At night, encounters with people and objects are perceived as unique, as if the daytime noise has been lifted from the world, and only special events pass through the nocturnal filter.

Perhaps this happens because in the genetic memory of every person, nighttime has been imprinted as the most dangerous period. Predators go hunting at night, and attacks from hostile tribes can occur. In unsafe urban areas, the risk of assault is higher than during the day. In darkness, a person loses the sharpness of vision, and therefore, control over the world around him. That’s why at night, a person’s senses and perception become heightened, even if they are in a safe place. We perceive the world differently at night.

I aim to showcase moments that imply a narrative: the hidden beginnings and endings of untold stories. These are the instances where our heightened senses at night scream that they cannot exist on their own, that there is something concealed from us nearby. By day, they might be mundane scenes, but at night, they take on new meaning, unsettling the vestiges of our psyche, which, much like in the Stone Age, scans the night for a tiger rather than an antelope.</text>

<text>‘Orbita’ is a district in the southwest of the Almaty city, Kazakhstan. This area began to be developed with typical Soviet blocks in the 1970s. Today, Orbita stands as a realm unto itself, a ‘city within a city,’ because it is isolated from other city areas, bordered on one side by a river and on the other by a highway.

I often pass by Orbita on my way to and from work. As autumn and winter fog descends upon Almaty, I find myself drawn to the edges of Orbita, where Soviet edifices loom like specters in the fog. I’ve always wanted to take a stroll there and explore this area.

From January to March of 2024, I embarked on a quest — a visual odyssey dedicated to capturing the essence of Orbita in a visual diary. I started this project on the day of an earthquake in Almaty January 22nd and finished it on my birthday, March 2nd. The diary tells about the light and dark sides of Orbita: about children’s ice rinks, past murders, graffiti, space communication ground station and meetings with old friends, but mostly it talks about my perception of the surrounding world.

<text>The images and texts in The Fragment Corpora include a variety of seemingly random elements referencing aerial views, coding, psychological tests, allegories, art history, astronomy, poetry, micro and macro environments, images of wholeness, fragmentation and the mathematical sublime.

Early collections of knowledge about the world, such as libraries and encyclopaedias also include Cabinets of Curiosities. These collections prefigured the museums of modern times, when collectors began to favour taxonomies based on science and history. The digital world, in which we can include AI, is perhaps the most recent episode in this story of ‘completist’ projects which attempt to lay out the world before us.

The book embraces the limitations of such attempts to construct meaningful images of the world we inhabit, acknowledging the optics through which such descriptions are necessarily determined.

The Fragment Corpora seeks to expand the notion of the book into something which can be experienced in a three dimensional space. The pages of the book variously represent projections, prints, lightboxes, screens and online presentations and ultimately a large language model (LLM), currently in development.</text>
