The work is part of an ongoing exploration of identity, beauty and individual character. The Hijra community is an extremely complex and difficult narrative to understand, one that I am still learning about and from. Legally recognized as the "third gender" in India, a forward stance from one of the few countries that have given recognition to a gender other than male or female, the Hijra community is often ostracized by society but then called upon for spiritual blessings. The complex and entwined; historical, sometimes spiritual and newly recognized social positioning of Hijras in Indian society is what lead me to create this body of work. These pictures were made in a controlled environment that allowed me to gain the trust of the individual and give them the space to present themselves as they wished and capture individual character and beauty. This book acts as a catalogue and compilation of the images I created during the winter of 2018/19. All images are photographed using daylight only. When I came up with the idea of creating images that resemble icebergs I immediately had some questions in my mind. Will our climate change drastically over the next few decades if we don‘t change our way of living? Will icebergs still be around when my childrens‘ children are born? I felt I needed to create images feeding this irritation, taking images of frozen water and other natural materials to recreate the look of icebergs. Photorealistic images in small scale resembling monumental icebergs, creating the illusion of an arctic landscape. Photography has always been a reference point to reality. This project is a reminder of the fragility of our eco system, especially when looking at the rapid change happening in the polar regions and the development of the global climate. Coming from a documantary photography background, the environment, the way it shapes us and vice versa, is the main focus of my work. The book contains a collection of daytime collages and nocturnal poems: Images of sunlight and clouds caught in interiors are put next to rhymes I had written in sleepless nights. In the collages, I combined analog photographs of skies I had taking during previous travels with digital photographs I shot inside. The home thus turns into an ambiguous space in which everything starts to merge: inside and outside, reality and dream, virtual and physical, day and night.
