<text>The year 2020 represented a pivotal moment in history, as a pandemic caused dramatic shifts to lives globally, and political upheaval which began in the United States echoed far beyond. Nowhere was this more apparent visually than within the work of a collective of photographers traditionally recognized for documenting the world at large. How did Magnum photographers depict their reflections and realisations, and chart events taking place around the world, over the course of this period?

For their latest collaborative book project, members of Magnum were asked to submit work from the preceding 12 months, reflecting upon personal journeys, artistic developments, and global scenes of upheaval and crisis. A re-imagination of the long-running end of year Magnum portfolio series in print, Magnum 2020 invited each photographer to fill two spreads as they wished with images and text. Incorporating work from the breadth of Magnum’s membership, the book spans personal art projects, reportage, portraiture, and social documentary – offering an in depth view of Magnum Photos as it exists today. You can get a copy from the Magnum Shop here.

In this Q&A, the project’s editor, and president of the collective, Olivia Arthur, speaks about the process of creating a photographic representation of a year.</text>

<text>Homeland is a photobook and exhibition catalogue capturing the outcome of photographer Paulina Korobkiewicz’s 18-month residency at Centrala, realised between West Bromwich and Hyson Green. Exploring themes of political identity, belonging, memory, and representation, this project examines the lives and spaces of migrant communities, especially Polish migrants, in these multicultural towns. Through her photographs, Korobkiewicz documents people and the physical landscapes—buildings, streets, and public spaces—that reflect a fusion of cultural identities, nostalgia, and contemporary life.

Throughout the residency, Korobkiewicz established close relationships with community members, joining local celebrations, and leading dialogues to understand how migrant communities interact within and influence these neighbourhoods. Her work is accompanied by photographic projects from Sylwia Ciszewska-Peciak, Yuxi Hou, Ismail Khokon, and Marcin Forys, members of the Central European Photography Club, with whom she collaborated as a mentor. Together, their work creates a collective portrait of migration, belonging, and visibility.

This artist residency forms part of ‘Post-Socialist Britain?’, a research initiative exploring memory, representation, and political identity among German, Polish, and Ukrainian immigrants in the UK. The project was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and developed in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Nottingham Trent University. Curated by Rafailia Thiraiou, Homeland serves as both a visual archive and an exhibition catalogue.</text>

<text>Disco Polo documents the aesthetics in Eastern Poland after 1989. This project focuses on the mixed influences from East and West, the effects of global capitalism on the Polish landscape dominated by consuming colourful advertising. Lack of experts in local housing associations resulted in randomly chosen shades, turning the streets into a vivid collage of pastel tower blocks. Project presents kitsch of rough-and-ready billboards, suburban night-clubs and bright-coloured concrete blocks. It explores omnipresent visual chaos in the urban landscape and search for a ‘better world'.

Title Disco Polo represents locally popular music genre of the same name, which developed in Eastern Poland around the time of the political transition. The genre created its own aesthetics, from the outfits to the venues where it is performed. Naive lyrics and over-saturated video clips often embody longing for western capitalism and hope for better future.

Disco Polo is a collection of photographs presenting visual chaos in the common space. Neon colours replacing grey plattenbau from the Polish People's Republic, false plants in granite flowerpots, a roadside palm tree in a winter landscape.'

<text>A new book, by author and curator Clément Chéroux, together with Clara Bouveresse, explores the history of Magnum, through key historical events, and issues and developments in the photography industry, alongside the seminal Magnum photographs that have defined the agency. The curated tome demonstrates how Magnum Photos owes its pre-eminence to the ability of its photographers to encompass and navigate the points between photography as art object and photography as documentary evidence. A Magnum photograph can be expressive and bear witness at the same time.

Unearthed correspondence, notes and other writing between Magnum photographers over the years reveal the inner workings and heated debates at the heart of the agency. Inge Morath’s writing for 1981 exhibition Paris/Magnum spoke of a “communal warmth” of the agency, and painted the following portrait of the agency’s first years.</text>

                <text>About the Exhibition
Some years ago, I visited Stickney, South Dakota to photograph their centennial celebration and historical pageant. With the prairie as a backdrop the town’s people enacted their history starting with Lewis and Clark, followed by women in sunbonnets and calico dresses, and missionaries dressed in black. During the intermission, the master of ceremonies told jokes and imitated Bing Crosby, while “Indians” dressed in homemade burlap costumes, their white faces painted to portray “otherness,” gathered in the background.

I decided to photograph how Americans remember the past, in order to understand what is revealed by the events we choose to celebrate as history.

The second act brought war whoops and galloping horses to signal the demise of Custer, followed by prospectors, gold-sifting pans in hand, and cowboys driving cattle. The grand finale featured a favorite son, who had left Stickney to play in a lounge act in Fargo, returning to play “Great Balls of Fire,” on an upright piano. Later that night in my hotel room, I wondered how these events expressed history. What would the Lakota Sioux who lived on a reservation outside of Stickney think of this pageant? What would their version of history say about the last one hundred years? I decided to photograph how Americans remember the past, in order to understand what is revealed by the events we choose to celebrate as history. Initially I went to sites I studied in elementary school: Plymouth Rock, Jamestown, Gettysburg, Mount Vernon. Everywhere I went, I found others exploring the past: retired couples in RVs, and families on vacation stopping at historical markers. I met Civil War buffs and Vietnam veterans. Everyone was trying to find a way to connect to the past.

I began to understand how the framing of the past evolves…

I observed historic iconography everywhere and realized that its usage elicits a predictable response, valuable for selling merchandise, constructing identity, and invoking patriotism. I began to understand how the framing of the past evolves, reflecting the belief and ideals of the present.

These photographs are my quest to understand how I, and we, remember history. My intention with these images is to address how the culture and morality of today are reflected in what we commemorate about the past.
