Title A name given to the resource TARTARUS - Epping Forest Description An account of the resource The name Tartarus refers to the place of torture and punishment in Greek mythology. Most of the Titans and the fifty female Danaides were imprisoned there, and many others too. The dead stumps and twisted, split or hollow trees of Epping Forest bear witness to the forestry practice of pollarding. Up until the 1870’s the wood was cut and sold over and over again, exhausting the tree until sometimes only a hollow stem was left. These scarred trees and stumps are like magnificent sculptures to me, screaming in silent agony but also still standing mighty proud. "We began this project during the UK’s final national lockdown, inspired by our newly heightened sense of curiosity in the people that surround us; born from months of isolation and social distancing. It had highlighted to us just how easy it is to paint an idea of a person, from the smallest of details they portray. We realised this concept felt much like being at a train station. Where you nosily observe the people that pass you by, your watchfulness serving as procrastination whilst you wait for your train to pull in. This is when we began to create a series of our own fictional hyper-real characters, all waiting for a train. Using ourselves as models, we took on their personas one by one with the aid of costume, prop and make-up. The title of this project, Solipsism Syndrome, is “a psychological state in which a person feels that reality is not external to their mind.” (Space Technology, 2003).It is a condition astronauts develop when they live in space for extended periods. The collection of photos is a mixture of photographs taken inside my house and NASA images. Losing a sense of social belonging, my reality was constructed only based on the endless internal dialogues and interactions with inanimate objects in the house. My own thoughts and experience were the only thing that proves my existence and nothing in the outside world mattered to me. I felt like I was in a train running in an endless loop and I constantly needed to escape from something. I projected this mental state onto the ordinary objects and scenes in my house.
