<text>A historic building is a legend of one’s own time. A trace of it is left and gets exposed on an instant photo. Each frame is a monument to be discovered and preserved. A photo in hand is a ticket to ride on a time machine. Travelling between different points along the timeline, we re-witness moments in history. When the past and present are juxtaposed, humans cannot help but respond with contemplations and a sense of nostalgia.

Now and Then is a personal documentary on occidental colonial-style buildings in Hong Kong. Each place, may it be a barracks, a court house or a church, exudes its own lasting charm. What if we slow down and listen to the stories of these timeless aesthetics.

Now and Then exhibited in Los Angeles Center of Photography(US), The Rencontres d’Arles Book awards (Paris, France), Amber Gallery-Museum (Lithuania), Wonder Foto Day (Taipei, Taiwan), Hong Kong Photo-Book Fair (Hong Kong). The book received an Honorable Mention in Book - Self Published Category at International Photo Awards 2019.</text>

<text>Cave Homo is a zine about professional skateboarder Brian Anderson. Mostly known for his international success becoming Thrasher’s Skater of the Year in 1999 and winning the World Cup of Skateboarding in Münster, Germany the same year, he has since become one of the most iconic and respected professional Skateboarders worldwide. In 2016, Brian came out as gay. In a Vice documentary he talks about his journey, fears, and why it was the right decision to no longer keep his sexuality a secret.

Designer Luke Williams and photographer Christian Trippe collaborated closely with Brian to create Cave Homo. The zine is a combination of portraits, shot in an exclusive intimate photo shoot, excerpts from Brian’s private sketchbooks and personal collection of polaroids. Cave Homo reveals a new and different side of Brian, outside the skateboarding world.</text>

<text>At the end of 2011, Peruvian national news broke a story about a series of barbaric murders that took place deep in the Peruvian Amazon in a region called Balsapuerto, home to the indigenous Shawi. In a period of just ten months, 14 traditional Shawi healers (or ‘curanderos’, as they are known locally) were reported to have become victims of a wave of brutal killings. According to local reports, the suspected orchestator behind these murders was Balsapuerto’s acting Mayor at the time, Alfredo Torres Rucoba. Accused of carrying out a politically motivated campaign of witch killings he, and his brother Augusto, earnt themselves that local nickname ‘Los Matabrujos’. The Banished of Balsapuerto is an ongoing investigation into these deaths and the theories behind them, using a mix of on-location interviews, previously unreleased police and court materials, excerpts from local press coverage as well as original photographs and illustrations and in-depth writing.

"Witch Hunt Vol. I: The Banished of Balsapuerto" was shortlisted for the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles (2020), the Images Vevey Book Award (2021) and the MACK First Book Award (2021) among others.</text>

<text>Christophe Gin has been awarded the 6th edition of the Carmignac Foundation’s Photojournalism Award, winning a €50,000 grant for Colonie, his work ruminating on lawless areas in France. Created in 2009, the award has sponsored photojournalism in conflict zones and neglected regions; previous winners include Robin Hammond (featured in our latest Portrait issue) and recent Magnum Photos nominee Newsha Tavakolian.

The award was mired in controversy last year, after Tavakolian contended that the foundation’s benefactor, French investment banker Edouard Carmignac began to interfere with with the presentation of her work to an “unacceptable” degree. The foundation disputed her remarks, claiming the postponing of her project was due to purported threats to the photographer’s safety, which it said Tavakolian reported.

It would seem any acrimony has abated, however – Tavakolian’s work will be part of the Carmignac Foundation’s upcoming retrospective at Saatchi Gallery, London. It features 40 works produced since the award’s inception by all laureates – Kai Wiedenhöfer, Massimo Berruti, Robin Hammond, David Monteleone, Tavakolian and this year’s winner Christophe Gin.

Colonie, Gin’s winning project delved into French Guiana, a region in South America that is officially a region of France, after the invasion and settlement by the French in the 18th century. The area has been associated with gold prospecting since the 19th century, and the booming market led to marked social and economic inequality, compounding fierce divides. The images suggest a tension and a history stretching back centuries that informs the way the various factions and communities in this region interact. We spoke to Gin about his interest in the region and the challenges he faced along the way.</text>
