<text>Sakura Lust is the first monograph by Casper Kent.

Shot over the course of a year – from the arrival of the first cherry blossom through the Japanese Autumn – during nights spent in ryokans and love hotels throughout Japan.

Echoing the Japanese adoration for Hanami (The annual tradition of welcoming the briefly blossoming Sakura, enjoying that moment and celebrating all it represents) the intimacy captured in Sakura Lust floats somewhere between an erotic dream and reality.

The book serves as a lust story, an attempt to seize a fleeting moment in life and make it last indefinitely.</text>

<text>“Same same, but different” is a common phrase in Thailand mainly used with tourists. I think it shows a flexibility of thought and the Thai flair for
translation, doubling the word for emphasis. Compiling the photos for this zine I found I had a lot of pairs that embodied this concept, they naturally fell into place around this theme. For me they represent what I really enjoy about wandering around the streets in Thailand.
I grew up in London, and when I first visited Thailand I was struck by the relaxed humour in every day life. So many things were different from what I was used to back home, from night markets to entire families on motorbikes. People have generally been very welcoming and open with me there. It’s one of my favourite places in the world to take photographs because of this.
The ๆ symbol is used to indicate that the word or phrase preceding it is repeated, for the title I decided on “Same ๆ”. I hope my images have captured some of the humour and duality I have encountered. These photographs were taken on multiple trips to the Kingdom of Thailand between 2017-2023.</text>

<text>Inspired by the tinsel scarlet and reds of Christmas shop windows, using colour for this set of photographs is a new departure for Summerfield. Need and desire are wilfully blurred in a crimson haze throughout shopping centres, all the more garish when seen beside the muted colours of rough sleepers in streets and doorways. The consumerism he shows is resistant to examination, to questions like: “What good comes of this?”These photographs show a different but equally shocking contrast — the ever more discordant commercialism, with glossy and brash store windows, shopping mall displays, the crass glitter of the festive season. This is a photographic sermon, to invite us to compassion.</text>

<text>Ravensbourne BA Digital Photography Internship Programme fully funded by The Photobook Cafe and Rapid Eye Darkrooms
We are delighted to welcome BA Digital Photography students from Ravensbourne University London to The Photobook Café for a six-week work placement programme running throughout March and April. This opportunity has been fully funded by The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye Darkrooms.
During their time with us, students will take part in an intensive, multi-strand programme designed to provide practical, professional experience across the breadth of a working cultural organisation.
The placement is structured across four core strands, enabling students to develop a broad and practical understanding of working within a cultural organisation. Through research and writing, they engage critically with the photobook collection while producing a substantial written project; through curation and public programming, they gain hands-on experience in exhibition-making, contributing to displays, talks, and artist liaison; through communications and documentation, they build skills in audience engagement across social media, editorial content, and visual documentation; and through facilitation and community engagement, they support and co-deliver zine workshops and participatory sessions. In addition, the programme includes specialist sessions such as an industry shadowing visit to Rapid Eye, offering insight into a leading independent photography space, and a business operations session led by The Photobook Cafe’s Director, introducing the practical and financial realities of running a sustainable cultural venue.
Throughout April, a curated selection of photobooks studied by the cohort will be on public display in The Photobook Cafe and Rapid Eye Darkrooms. Each of the ten participating students has selected titles that reflect and support their individual practices and interests in printed matter. These selections are accompanied by a written research thesis, produced in-house as a series of zines, with each publication entering The Photobook Café’s permanent collection for visitors to read and reference. This work is particularly significant in the context of increasing inaccessibility to specialist materials, photobooks are often difficult to access, even within universities where library collections are being reduced. Through the placement, each student spends approximately 70 hours engaging directly with our collection, developing a deeper understanding of how an archive is built and activated, while also bringing attention to underrepresented publications and expanding the breadth of sub-genres within the existing collection.

Alongside the physical displays at The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye darkrooms, the exhibitions will also be presented within our online photobook collection. This digital iteration ensures that the featured publications and research can be accessed by audiences worldwide, extending the reach and longevity of the programme beyond the physical space.

<text>“Saved: Objects of the Dead” is a collaborative book by artist Jody Servon and poet Lorene Delany-Ullman. The book considers how everyday possessions can mediate grief and sustain connections to the deceased. “Saved” features photographs of belongings saved after a loved one’s death paired with prose poems that honor the emotional afterlives of ordinary things. Combining object study, ethnography, photography, and language, “Saved” addresses intimacy, collective memory, and human mortality.

This fifteen year project was developed through contributions from participants who lent an object they had kept after the death of someone close to them and shared its story in an interview. The objects include items such as a star ornament, a worn matchbook, clothing, tools and other possessions marked by use and time. Each object is photographed with close attention to its presence, material details and evidence of wear. Interviews with each participant are distilled into spare prose poems that preserve each participant’s voice while creating space for broader reflection.

Word and image function as collaborators, forming a lyrical, community-produced archive of grief, memory, attachment, and enduring love. The directness of the photographs and poems allows the work to span differences in gender, age, occupation, marital status, culture, and religious belief while recognizing the shared experience of loss. As individuals and communities navigate death, separation, displacement, and change, “Saved” offers a quiet and humane space for reflection, recognition, and connection.

The book is the culmination of a long-term project and includes “Mattering,” an essay by Cora Fisher, Curator of Visual Art Programming at the Brooklyn Public Library. It also features invited micro-essays and photographs by artists and authors Sonya Clark, Alex Espinoza, Erika Hayasaki, Swati Khurana, and Leslie Gray Streeter. An online component, @savedobjects, extends the project by inviting public submissions and stories about objects kept after a death, reinforcing the artists’ commitment to shared storytelling and collective witness.</text>

<text>A scrap can be a small amount of something - something that has been left over, after the greater part
has been used. It can relate to food - the uneaten bits left after a meal, or bits of the fruit you choose
not to eat. A scrap can emphasise the smallness of something, whether it’s breaking up something or
disassembling it. To scrap something, can mean to discard or eliminate it - it is located amongst the
realm of removal. In terms of scrap metal, its intention is to be kept, suitable for reprocessing, and
recombining for greater volume. This accumulation of bits over time, is how the growth of a Scrapbook
can form.

Scrapbooks tend to be associated with mismatched, random, pasting in of ideas or materials that somehow,
perhaps sentimentally, are worth keeping. Scrapbooks can share a story, preserve an item or restore it.
They can be random or personal, documentative or sentimental, and can be just as chaotic as how the
scraps came to be.

This Scrapbook is a collection of discarded photographic material. From snippets of film collected on the
ground, to unexposed sheets of film, chemical leaks, or light fogging on photosensitive film or paper.
Each mark made through the developing process, disregarded and un-used, has been collected from a
Photographic Lab and from the Artists personal archive.

Removed and displaced from the Photographers intentions, teeth marks appear from the clips used to hang
a roll of film on its loading rack. There are glue marks that attach film to its backing paper, and circular cut out
shapes on the end of a 35mm roll of film. If the film is old and is so thin you can sometimes see the paper
packaging directions come through...These references and potential images, have been revived in a process
of handprinting, to form their own unique shape and purpose as a Scrapbook.</text>
