Each chapter shows one space that I visited. The starting point is coming to Tokyo as an alien and seeing only its outside perspective, my view still shaped by the imagery I associated with Japan. As time went on and I got to know more people living or working in Tokyo, I slowly developed a sense of home and with that my relationships evolved. I began to portray young adults around my age that I met and found through social media and photographed them in their homes. When thinking back on the connection between all of the subjects, I realise that each has a fluid identity, albeit in different ways – whether that be home, nationality, or gender identity. I see the young people I got to know in Japan as part of a globalised generation, and these portraits document my experience with their expressions of identity. The sections are not chronological, but rather references to the spaces themselves in an attempt to communicate the way I felt about each place documented. The book closes with a conversation with one of the subjects, Tia, on Tokyo, language and gender. I have photographed 210 sites where a murder has occurred. All the murders sites photographed were within the M25 Motorway. My aim is to give memory to what are mostly forgotten events, unseen places, landscapes where great violence has occurred. A violence that is mostly silent, private and unseen to the wider public. Most murders that take place rarely make the news and if they do occupy the news for a fleeting time. The Landscape reverts back to normality quickly after the forensic teams leave. Yet the scar is there, sometimes subtle, sometimes very open, whether it’s a single solitary flower or grieving family and friends. Sometimes there is nothing to show that a life has ended violently on the spot. The project has taken me to parts of London I knew little or nothing about. In the process of documenting these murder sites the project has created an alternative portrait of London, one shaped by violence and inequality. With Monochrome Eyes presents the work of sixteen lens-based artists, bringing a focus onto the use of greyscale within contemporary photographic practice. Each artist has contributed one black and white work and one colour work, connected through ideas, negotiations and depictions of the body. In the exhibition these works were displayed in two separated but connected spaces in a gallery bisected by a slatted wall. In the book the works are printed on different paperstocks. The exhibition and publication are part of a larger research inquiry, investigating the continued use of greyscale as a mode of representation, existing alongside, or in opposition, to the technicolour landscape of digital technology in which we are immersed.
