This project is a personal and darkly comic exploration of menopause, its symptoms (and tools for relief), and how we—as individuals and society—have been socialised to view...and overlook...female aging through media depictions. Using self-portraiture to explore the common tropes of the menopausal woman (as seen in magazines, medical pamphlets, Disney films, and tv—ie the witch, the bitch, the "Karen", the wise elder, the "Golden Girls")—these images have been turned into objects that reflect the symptoms and coping mechanisms of menopause. Since 2015 she has documented over 150 births, producing intimate and unflinching images that reclaim childbirth as a vital, political and collective experience. Her project Puérpera has been exhibited at the Uruguayan Contemporary Art Museum, Kavlin Foundation, Hiperespacio in Montevideo, and in Greece, Argentina and Slovakia. It has received international recognition including awards from Uruguay's Dirección Nacional de Cultura and the Fundación Itaú Cultural. Her photobook Puérpera, published by the Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo, launched in 2025. Alongside her photographic practice, Elenter collaborates on Uruguay's proposed Dignified Birth legislation. Join Uruguayan visual artist, photographer and doula Deborah Elenter for a relaxed, informal evening of book signing at The Photobook Cafe, hosted by the Birth Rites Collection.
