<text>“Abandoned Villages of Hong Kong”, is an invitation to explore the forgotten corners of this vibrant city, and to discover the haunting beauty that lies hidden within its parks and islands.

For centuries before the colonial era, Hong Kong’s population dwelled in isolated villages, subsisting mainly on farming or fishing. When better opportunities arose during the 1960s, many villagers found work in restaurants overseas or in the urban factories of Hong Kong. Meanwhile, their countryside houses - sometimes entire villages - were simply abandoned and left to be reclaimed by nature. Stefan’s photographs breathe new life into the crumbling facades and overgrown relics, allowing readers to witness the enduring charm of these abandoned homes.

With its documentary approach, this collection of photographs features many of Hong Kong’s most isolated settlements and is a testament to Stefan’s passion for capturing the essence of disappearing places. His careful research and deep appreciation for the subject shine through in every carefully composed image, unveiling the hidden narratives of structures frozen in time.

A foreword by Douglas Young sheds light on the architectural and social context of the photographs. Two further essays include some touching and highly personal histories by erstwhile village residents, with heart-warming recollections of village life experienced decades ago.

“Abandoned Villages of Hong Kong” can be seen as a tribute to the resilience of the Hong Kong people, but also the impermanence of our existence. Such photographs serve as a poignant reminder of both the transient nature of life, and the indelible mark left by those who came before us.</text>

<text>This companion book set explores the nostalgia of the English seaside throughout the seasons, from the somber beauty of winter months to its restored splendour in the glorious days of summer.

There is a melancholy about the English seaside in winter. No matter what Mother Nature throws at it, there is a resilience that enables it to resurrect its full magnificence in summer months.

It goes into hibernation, it falls into slumber and sleeps dormant like a perennial plant, just to flourish when the sun and warmth come back. Like trees that are bare and stark in winter. But in the summer they become beautiful, vibrant and everything we love about them.

<text>When you grow up facing the sea, the feeling of the ocean never goes away.

What impressed me the most when we settled on the Basque Coast was the light and different changes of atmosphere, which proved to be even stronger off-season. The moment when the region becomes deserted of its seasonal tourists and, as for any seaside resort, when the ambiance becomes more serene and friendly.

The emotion that came from it was so powerful that I felt compelled to transcribe it into images.

I prefer the banality of daily life to the journalistic reporting of an imposed situation. The surreal atmosphere of cities emptied of their inhabitants after the first lockdown in 2020 gave off a fake impression of stillness, which stopped me from photographing. It would have been another approach, another subject all together. So, I decided to wait for life to return to normal before the project could resurface.

Unlike a trip, where we arrive at a destination with a blank gaze; walking the streets of a familiar environment becomes a challenge.
Confronting yourself daily with the same details and atmospheres, everything can seem almost too banal to be interesting. It is precisely this challenge that interested me: the simplicity of things, the fascinating aesthetic of everyday life.

My exploration was exclusively by foot for a specific time, and I noticed that I always stayed within a 4km* radius of my home.
This ritual became a journey with imaginary boundaries, leaving free rein to intuitions and chance as I walked.

As opposed to a testimonial, my approach was to decipher a defined field in space so as to extract its essence. A sort of cartography where light and emotion were my only guides.

Unintentionally, I polarized my eternal sources of inspiration: architecture, cinema and literature; reminding me of George Perec and what he called “l’infra-ordinaire”.

Discovering characters’ attitudes from the images I just took had become a daily pleasure when I came back from a day of shooting.

APRES L ÉTÉ (After Summer) is not a project about emptiness, but rather what is around it and within it. It’s about observing a fragment of reality as I see and feel it, without the pretension of telling any other story than the one you can make yourself by looking at the photographs.

What we really see and what we discover over time, simply by observing closer.

<text>Frank Watson’s latest book, Rollercoasting (published, June 2022) contains 40 colour photographic images and an introductory essay that explores the Kent coast as a frontier between England and Europe. The coastline fluctuates between the flatlands of Thanet and Dungeness and the undulating chalk hills and cliffs of the North Downs. The photographs allude to the way certain sites are historically respected whilst other places remain quiet and overlooked. The images attempt to portray a coastline that is shaped by both respect and contempt, where the natural and the industrial are often at odds with one another.
However the images also emphasize the pleasures of the often unwitting and eccentric quirkiness of human intervention.
