<text>as a djinn is a collection of black and white photographs of the city of Delhi, India, Kira’s hometown.

The images were made over a period of 4 years (2018-21), during which Kira observed and photographed her city through a lens of grief, loneliness, anxiety, and sometimes, hope.

During difficulties with mental health, the exercise was to see oneself in the world and to see the world in oneself.

Delhi is the capital city of India, and has been the seat of power for many empires in the past. It is chaotic, aggressive, eerie, and ugly; it is also charming, resilient, surreal, and seductive. Perhaps it is so because of all it has survived: being built, destroyed, and rebuilt century after century at the whims of different men. They say the city has been rebuilt seven times, the one standing today being the eighth: a crowded noisy concrete labyrinth, a sedimented necropolis.

In dusty tombs of royalty unknown, curious staircases always bolted and locked, bored pigeons seasonal flowers, frustrated graffiti, neglected museum treasure, protest, and artist-friends, she shows her city, as a djinn.</text>

<text>The book is a kind of retrospective of 5 years of photography by Douglas Tonkin. Doug tragically past away age 21. 10 years later a group of his friends and old art school classmates put this book together to showcase a career cut short. We made it in one way as testament to our friend and in another as a narrative showing the classic young photographers explorations - Social documentary, self portraits, family, still life, long exposures!
All photos taken on film. The book includes a forward about the project that does it much better justice than this summary. </text>

<text>Since the year of 2011, I have been documenting my life into a personal “ A Diary ” project, Month by month, with different analogue cameras. In this ongoing project, I’m learning to explore my surroundings, the way people connect and
are embedded in their surroundings, and the symbiosis between the two. At the end of every month, I develop the film and upload the results onto my website,
where they act as my life’s photo album and which in time began also to show at different solo and group exhibitions, both local and international. For my diary project, I understood that the subjects which interest me the most are individuals and the way they change according to their group or surroundings. This intimate diary project reflects the lives of both the people I meet and the changes I am going through in the time frame of the project. The subjects in this body of work are composed of objects, animals, landscapes, light, shape and form which all contain the presence of human culture. A main part of the project is creating an archive of portraits; groups of strangers and individuals I’m not familiar with, people in my social circle who got close to me through time, and friends or family which I have known all of my life. Through the photographs, they become a representation of a point in time and culture.
Contemporary culture agrees that choices are a dominant factor in defining an individual. We are what we choose, and what we choose can speak volumes about who we are.</text>

<text>Humans live, age, and eventually face their seemingly inevitable death. For all living beings, death is the immutable constant – a natural law – to which all life succumbs. But what happens when this law loses its validity?

Several hundred people worldwide are putting their faith in the promise of a future technology designed to make their death reversible. In the meantime, their bodies, or optionally just their brains, are stored in nitrogen-cooled tanks at minus 196 degrees Celsius.

For his graduation work, Janick Entremont delves into a subject as ancient as humanity itself: death and how we deal with it. In doing so, he not only documents the ambitious experiment called cryonics, but also searches for clues to the existential question raised by what it enables: what is the value of time if it does not end?</text>

<text>Twenty weights, please is the story of two very important women of my childhood and life: my maternal grandmother and her daughter. With this personal project and my pictures of many places so meaningful for their memories, I want to celebrate these two women and theit life in London, in the 1950s.
Their strength, their ability to survive and to make do, in a big struggle but with great dignity, always inspired my desire to “be”. I started to collect every little thing, a small object or trace of my Grandma’s English time. I remember when she was still alive at her place – between a cigarette and a cup of tea – how her tales from that past captured my imagination.
I chose to resume and recollect the traces of their lives in a London that, although changed, still talks about that time. This project ideally begins with one of the first sentences my mother learned, “Twenty Weights, please”, while trying to buy some cigarettes (twenty) for her mother.
This is a diary: written and lived by them, read and re- written by me through an in-and-out-of-time journey which enters my present from the past, leaving me with a sense of melancholy. The images I shot over the last 20 years safeguard this emotional archive: no sign of time, just working places, the house, empty roads they ran with their bicycles, the market street full of leftovers, the light at the end of the day.</text>

<text>The project was Inspired by our personal relationship, which blossomed during the Covid-19 lockdown, but also out of a struggle with feeling stuck and uninspired with our personal work at the time.

For over two years we photographed couples in their homes, mostly around Israel but also in the UK and Europe.
Our aim is to represent couples that are often overlooked by mainstream media, by making the invisible - visible.

For us, the most special thing about this project is the experience of witnessing love, intimacy, and acceptance between the couples, which is beyond social norms, gender, body image, disabilities, age, culture, etc.

Each time we left a couples’ house after a shoot, we felt very lucky, inspired, and mostly thankful for the chance to witness and commemorate all of that through our photography.

You are invited to the lives and homes of 25 couples, depicting different settings and lifestyles.</text>

The fluidity of the book lies with the factors of time and people, from which the photographs created themselves spontaneously - it’s a time capsule filled with people doing ordinary things at the most meaningful of times. It’s an ode to enjoying the now.</text>

<text>This is a book of photography and text from 2015 and 2016, and there are four deconstructions within it.

The first deconstruction is of my father’s physical being. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was undergoing rigorous chemotherapy treatments. Whilst dealing with the intensity of these, his arms and hands began freezing. He was a carpenter and he was struggling to hammer, cut and plane. It agitated him. A specialist diagnosed him as having Parkinson’s Disease. A diagnosis he found even more brutal than the cancer. He lost confidence in his work and the freezing episodes put him at risk of losing his driving license.

‘Deconstruction’ in the building trade means to dismantle something so that the individual elements are kept for reuse, rather than discarded.

The second deconstruction in the book is my own. My father was my absolute hero. I was in despair. I was in pieces during this period. I sought solace in masochism and excess because I couldn’t face the pain of seeing my father die. I saw death and religious iconography everywhere.

The text my father wrote over the course of his death is a third deconstruction. The hospital suggested he kept a medical journal of his day-to-day dealing with illness. It’s him breaking down the experience in forced, painful diaristic accounts of his body shutting down.

The last deconstruction is the photography. With each hand printed photographic exposure, with each chance to catch the essence of something that was being pulled away from me, I wanted tangibility and texture. The drapes thrown over the chairs in the living room. His workman’s yard – the metal and the rust. The nuts and bolts of a life falling apart.

Around the time leading up to the death was my frenzied expression and plea for help in 2016. I often met people away from home in an enclosed private setting.

The world was muddy, and I was nihilistic. The process soothed me as I searched for meaning.

It was the first time in my life I had witnessed death. I was in denial for a long time, simply not believing the day would ever come. Then before you know it, the wind is taken from my sails. It was about the early morning when the fatal time came. The ambulance arrived, Dad got rushed into hospital in a frenzied climax in the last moments. I got to say goodbye, hold his hand and be close to him.

Grieving is a long slow process and at the very beginning, it is all-encompassing. As you evolve, the aftermath gets easier and I began fixing myself up. Seeking help and letting incredible people into my life.

A year later when tidying things away I found a bloody tissue in Dad's dressing gown pocket. I kept it stored away in a 35mm film cassette. It moved with me from home to home. As a way of holding on. I had it photographed forensically in a science lab. I wanted to find him metaphorically in another world. In search of awe. An essence of his existence in an abstract form. I photographed relentlessly, the otherwise tiny tissue came to life with fragments of his DNA magnified quite beautifully under the lens.

When Someone is dying and you count down to someone's last breath. To see the colour drain from the face of a loved one, to see the body still and calm after so much wretched pain and suffering, that's powerful. The silence lingers.

I can't accept that there isn't something greater out there after death. I parted with my Dad's tissue. I placed it carefully in a whisky bottle and set it out to sea. I wanted to close this chapter on my life and set the memory free.</text>
