Over a period of three years, Michael Collins photographed the interiors of historic and live nuclear reactors and power stations across the UK. Documenting infrastructure spanning a period of seven decades, the photographs in The Nuclear Sublime depict the present state and future of Britain’s nuclear industry— usually hidden from public view.
Collins was granted unprecedented access to Dounreay, Sellafield, Chapelcross, Winfrith, Dungeness, Trawsfynydd, Sizewell A and B, Wylfa and Torness. His large-format photographs show the heart of a live reactor, the storage of nuclear waste, the control rooms and instrumentation, the process of decommissioning old sites, and the insides of fusion “Tokamak” reactors. His photographs depict both the vast scale of the austere chapel-like spaces and intricate details such as rusting control panels with wonky labels, peeling paintwork and miles of wiring. The imagery reveals the contrasts between the monumental size and heights of scientific endeavour with the reality of the sometimes dusty, and worn, outdated equipment and interiors. The images playfully capture the child-like colour palette and pipes alongside abstracted patterns and textures of the intricate infrastructure.
‘A significant proportion of Britain’s retired nuclear power stations are still standing, and because of the issues surrounding their decommissioning (dealing with the radioactive legacy and working in close proximity to it) much of the original infrastructure and equipment remain almost intact. Contrary to industry’s practice of obliterating its history before it can be monumentalised, a significant element of nuclear energy’s archaeology is still standing.’
The world’s first civil nuclear programme was established in the UK, marked by the opening of Calder Hall, Windscale in 1956. The country currently generates about 15% of its electricity from nuclear sources. It has nine operational nuclear reactors at five locations power stations, and fourteen that are no longer functioning. In July 2023, the government launched Great British Nuclear, with the aim of generating 25% of the UK’s electricity by 2050 through a combination of large nuclear plants and small modular reactors. Most existing capacity is to be retired by the end of the decade.
Michael Collins was born in India in 1961. He has lectured at Harvard, The Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths, and is Visiting Professor of Photography, University of Suffolk. His work has been exhibited internationally including at the British Museum, Barbican Art Centre, SK Stiftung, Cologne, Janet Borden Gallery, New York, RIBA Gallery and City Hall, London; Birmingham City Art Gallery; FFoto Gallery, Cardiff and Impressions Gallery, York. He has been commissioned by the Design Council and Network Rail, The Institution of Chemical Engineers, Birmingham City Council and Potteries Museum and Art Gallery amongst others. His work has been published in Frieze, Granta, Apollo, FT Weekend Magazine, The Guardian, RIBA magazine, Blueprint, Evening Standard, Source, Wallpaper*, and Le Monde amongst others. The Nuclear Sublime is his sixth book.

La Disparition is a dip into French spirit weaving together series of pictures taken during Paris Fashion Weeks and the Gilets Jaunes protests in 2018. It explores the link between the world of luxury, the Vendôme column, the Commune, the origin of anger, revolution, circularity, fashion weeks, cycles and sorority through pictures and text. It's an hybrid object where a book is sewn hidden within a book, the pages of text hiding and revealing images echo the notion of high visibility jackets worn by people feeling invisible while the making of the book - no glue, just paper cut, folded and sewn - is like one of clothes.

Xenitia is an archive, centered on displacement to Greece. It is framed by two motifs: “nostos” (Classical Greek; to return home, homecoming) and “algos” (Classical Greek; pain, grief). Together, these affect-laden words form the root of “nostalgia”. “Xenitia” itself is a Greek term that encompasses the state of being a foreigner, otherness, estrangement, loss, distance, and a profound yearning for home soil.
The collection, which was made in 2016, produces a complex mosaic of movement and feeling within Greece. In 1923, a treaty was drawn up between the governments of Greece and Turkey which forcibly displaced millions of people from their homes. Recent economic hardship in Greece has produced a fresh wave of emigration. At the same time, hundreds of people fleeing war and persecution at home arrive on Greek shores every day. Xenitia elicits comparison between the local and the universal, conjuring similarities amongst diverse experiences.

At the end of 2011, Peruvian national news broke a story about a series of barbaric murders that took place deep in the Peruvian Amazon in a region called Balsapuerto, home to the indigenous Shawi. In a period of just ten months, 14 traditional Shawi healers (or ‘curanderos’, as they are known locally) were reported to have become victims of a wave of brutal killings. According to local reports, the suspected orchestator behind these murders was Balsapuerto’s acting Mayor at the time, Alfredo Torres Rucoba. Accused of carrying out a politically motivated campaign of witch killings he, and his brother Augusto, earnt themselves that local nickname ‘Los Matabrujos’. The Banished of Balsapuerto is an ongoing investigation into these deaths and the theories behind them, using a mix of on-location interviews, previously unreleased police and court materials, excerpts from local press coverage as well as original photographs and illustrations and in-depth writing.
"Witch Hunt Vol. I: The Banished of Balsapuerto" was shortlisted for the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles (2020), the Images Vevey Book Award (2021) and the MACK First Book Award (2021) among others.

Har Shaam Shaheen Bagh* is an ode to the infinite courage and resilience of the women of Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, who sat in protest for a 100 days and nights. A book of photographs, drawings, songs, letters and other material gathered as a record of the iconic protest, marks an extraordinary moment in the political and contemporary history of India.
In December 2019 a small group of Muslim women from the working-class neighbourhood of Shaheen Bagh, came out of their homes and sat down in protest, occupying a stretch of one of Delhi’s busiest highways. They were standing up against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was designed to strip the Constitution of India of its right to religious equality. This peaceful sit-in began in December 2019 until the
pandemic sent India into lockdown, and the state used this as an opportunity to destroy and dismantle all traces of the protest. This
book serves as urgent and crucial evidence of a time that is systematically being erased from our collective memory.
From the women of Standing Rock and Black Lives Matter, The Dandi March and Chipko Movement, and those at the frontlines of India’s non-violent protests, this book is an act of remembrance that preserves the
powerful legacy of women at the forefront of historic revolutions.

Habitat is a series of photographs taken between 2016 and 2020. Marohn captured these photographs of homelessness whilst walking through Central London. During 2016 Marohn became acutely aware of an increase in tents outside London Underground Stations. It was then she decided to document the looming epidemic of homelessness.
Marohn was drawn to the subject by the stark contrast between the misery of homelessness and the wealth of the city. With their meagre belongings, they invariably made a very distinct ‘habitat’ out of their environment even in the most extreme circumstances. They made out of what little they possessed or could find a kind of identifiable ‘home’. It became routinely obvious that many passers-by were oblivious and lacked care due to desensitisation.
The project was approached counter-intuitively. Marohn documented the subject matter by removing all human presence from the frame to avoid an invasion of privacy. This had an effect of heightening a sense of desolation, isolation and destitution. Simultaneously, the eccentric and highly individualised ‘order within disorder’ was brought into sharp relief.
Marohn states: “I was conflicted as I found a certain aesthetic beauty in the arrangement of the material objects in the frame, yet it was difficult witnessing scenes of deprivation in this wretched social condition.”

Photographing in Calais over a period of two years, from November 2014 through December 2016, I documented refugees and migrants arriving there with the ultimate aim of reaching the UK. Several different camps in the area have served as temporary homes for countless people escaping war, torture and persecution in their home countries. The crisis is ongoing, and at this location near the narrowest part of the English Channel (separating mainland Europe from Great Britain), around 300 to 600 migrants at a time are now present in makeshift encampments.
The camps are places of in-between, where lives are suspended and disrupted while people seek protections and await bureaucratic validation in order to continue, in a legal sense. Settlements are under constant threat of being destroyed by French authorities, and violent interactions with police have created an ongoing struggle in Calais.
My aim is to challenges the perception of refugees and migrants with a view of intimate moments created after building trusting relationships – a response to a lack of awareness and intimacy that has fuelled negative stereotypes and racism.
