Francesca Allen (b. 1993, British) shares an intimate month spent with musician Aya Yanase, also known as Aya Gloomy. Unable to speak the same language, the series documents a growing friendship using photography as the sole medium of communication. We first meet Aya in the suburbs of Tokyo. Her tiny apartment is beneath that of her Grandma who sometimes throws snacks from her balcony for Aya to catch. Aya’s home is full to the brim of everything one could imagine, with piles of dishes and clothes everywhere. The month is simultaneously the happiest but most exhausting time; Francesca and Aya do everything together. Taking photographs becomes almost secondary. They introduce each other to their friends, they stay out too late and miss the train, sleeping at friends’ houses and Aya is shy and giggling when she gets undressed. The personal exposure involved in making the intimate public is tender and rare. This series of photographs enables a window into the vulnerabilities of both women who almost revel in the novelty of the experience. Aya is one year younger than Francesca, and they meet at similar points in their lives, perhaps feeling similar things. As their relationship develops, the book narrows in on a delicate and exciting period of new womanhood. The work builds a sense of belonging and friendship as Francesca turns her gaze adoringly on Aya, harnessing her energy to reveal strength and fragility. Aya is the represented subject, but through her photographs and the relationship that emerges between the two women, the division between representer and subject is diffused and we also understand a little of Francesca. Like many other photographers I had been joining them every month for almost a year and began to wonder how they ended up doing this. What were their backgrounds? Art? Fashion? Finance? The results were fascinating. The book took six months to compile, involving 54 photoshoots and 54 stories to edit. Their words tell a lot, and hopefully the photos reveal even more about these wonderful characters. The book also includes 8 pages of Moments from the various Colour Walks. Title A name given to the resource Eight Visits Shelfmark - 200.POR.KLOCK Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Sophie Klock Description An account of the resource “Eight visits” is a collection of eight personal encounters photographed in Tokyo, Japan, during my stay there in March and April 2019. Each chapter shows one space that I visited. The starting point is coming to Tokyo as an alien and seeing only its outside perspective, my view still shaped by the imagery I associated with Japan. As time went on and I got to know more people living or working in Tokyo, I slowly developed a sense of home and with that my relationships evolved. I began to portray young adults around my age that I met and found through social media and photographed them in their homes. When thinking back on the connection between all of the subjects, I realise that each has a fluid identity, albeit in different ways – whether that be home, nationality, or gender identity. I see the young people I got to know in Japan as part of a globalised generation, and these portraits document my experience with their expressions of identity. The sections are not chronological, but rather references to the spaces themselves in an attempt to communicate the way I felt about each place documented. The book closes with a conversation with one of the subjects, Tia, on Tokyo, language and gender.
