<text>'Sunday: A Portrait of 21st Century England' is a photo book that documents what people do on a Sunday and how that reflects society in 21st century England.

Sundays evolve as we age; our childhood memories are often held dear and as adults, we associate Sunday with the chance to relax and switch off from work and the world.

However, the last few decades have seen a huge shift away from traditional churchgoing, while consumerism and digital culture have changed the way we use our time. So what impact have these changes had on our ability to relax and be with ourselves? And how does the way we spend our leisure time reflect the nature of society in 21st century England?

After four years living and working abroad, photographer Matt Writtle returned to England and noticed a distinct cultural shift: church attendance had continued to decline while Sunday trading legislation and the growth of the internet had contributed to faster-paced, 24/7 lifestyles, making it harder for people to switch off from work and the world. It was this shift that inspired Sunday.

From 2006 to 2016, he documented the habits of a nation on its traditional day of rest, to see how they reflect our increasingly secular society. He selected subjects spanning a range of ages, backgrounds and locations across England, from a group of blind ramblers and a halal chicken farmer to a football fan and shoppers at Ikea.

Published after a successful Kickstarter campaign, his resulting photo book, 'Sunday', tells the story of 12 English Sundays and offers a snapshot of 21st century England.</text>

OSAKA CITY, JAPAN HAS THE HIGHEST RECORDED CONCENTRATION OF HOMELESSNESS IN THE COUNTRY. A FIGURE LARGELY THE RESULT OF 30 YEARS OF LAYOFFS IN THE DOMESTIC LABOR FORCE, COMBINED WITH A FAILED GOVERNMENT SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR PEOPLE OUT OF WORK AND FALLING INTO POVERTY.

"There was nothing special about Lion Farm Estate. It could have existed in more or less any British connurbation which was on the cusp of losing its raison d'etre. What is special is Clayton's humane rendering of it as a time capsule which emphasised ordinariness. This was how it was for millions of people in the early 90s. This was Britain between Thatcherism and, well, the smiley neo-Thatcherism of New Labour. A new political consensus was in place, an insidious consensus which blithely disregarded the sort of people who lived on such estates, the invisible people, the little people who had not the wherewithal to exercise their precious right to buy. Again Clayton leaves us to reach such conclusions. He has a broad and important socio-political point to make. It is all the more potent for being made so quietly." www.jonathanmeades.co.uk

"I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pictures capture the spirit of the estate very precisely." Ken Loach, Film Director

"Robert Clayton's images of ordinary modernism in the Black Country in the early 1990s are sharp, surprising and sad. They work as a vivid corrective to both sentimental nostalgia over the welfare state and the alarmist narratives of 'sink' estates - because here is neither hell nor utopia, but a depiction of a place and a people usually ignored or turned into cliche, rendered with visual intelligence and sensitivity" Owen Hatherley Author and Journalist

"The way you've put it all together feels like a narrative too, as if you're following the story of those characters and that place. And the photos themselves are so beautifully framed and composed, creating a rather epic feel to these everyday moments. Anyone with an interest in postwar British social history, modernist architecture or street photography would really enjoy this book." John Grindrod Author </text>

<text>For almost ten years Brooks has been returning to his childhood home in Derbyshire to photograph the land and research the story of his family’s printing press, a business which he knew very little about due to the death of his father when he was a teenager.

An imprint founded in 1898 by his great grandfather, F.W. Brooks, The Brooks Press published a wide range of material from travel guides and poetry to books on self-improvement. It finally closed its doors in the early 1970s, having passed from father to son for three generations, winding up just before Brooks was born.

By employing a mixture of exquisitely composed, atmospheric, large format colour portraits and landscapes combined with archival fragments and pages of letterpress, Chris Brooks examines the pull of history and the complicated nature of belonging and family.
By doing so, he draws our attention to the constantly changing meaning of what it is to be ‘in’ and ‘of’ England. The Brooks Press of Wirksworth is thus a timely meditation on changing notions of nationhood, identity and the power of place.

<text>An exploration of societal guilt. The first chapter presents the normality of the adult entertainment industry, specifically the global creative production centre, Los Angeles and the American West. With an objective investigation it becomes evident that the guilt surrounding the consumption of the products and services of this industry is wholly unfounded. The guilt only exists because of parenting, religious (mis) education, political agendas and ignorance.
The project evolved and widened; there is an inevitable hint of the American road trip, the influence of Hollywood and of course a personal perspective. Fact, anecdotes and humour combine for an easy romp through this innovative, technologically advanced and globally dominant industry.
Visually stunning, high production values and excellent texts from Daniel C Blight.</text>

<text>Photographer and life-long Tottenham Hotspur fan, Martin Andersen has turned his camera on his fellow fans to create ‘Can’t Smile Without You’, an intimate and often visceral collection of photographs taken at home, away, and across Europe from 2013 until 2017 with the last game played at the White Hart Lane stadium. Selected and edited from over one hundred different games, Andersen presents an authentic and unflinching documentation of the fans and their resultant relationships and community. His imagery depicts the drama, tensions, and raw emotions involved in such unwavering support of a football team that infiltrates every part of life.

Capturing a rapidly changing culture and a unique moment in Tottenham Hotspur’s history following the demolition of the 118 year-old stadium at White Hart Lane at the end of the 2016/17 season, the monochrome images in ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ also have a timeless quality that transcends the recent era they were taken in. These could be images of any diehard football fans and of the associated rituals, pre and post match, that are an integral part of being one.</text>

<text>The Landscape of Murder is a photographic series documenting all the sites where murders have occurred in London, United Kingdom between January 1st, 2011 and December 31st, 2012. I have photographed 210 sites where a murder has occurred. All the murders sites photographed were within the M25 Motorway.

My aim is to give memory to what are mostly forgotten events, unseen places, landscapes where great violence has occurred. A violence that is mostly silent, private and unseen to the wider public. Most murders that take place rarely make the news and if they do occupy the news for a fleeting time. The Landscape reverts back to normality quickly after the forensic teams leave. Yet the scar is there, sometimes subtle, sometimes very open, whether it’s a single solitary flower or grieving family and friends. Sometimes there is nothing to show that a life has ended violently on the spot. The project has taken me to parts of London I knew little or nothing about. In the process of documenting these murder sites the project has created an alternative portrait of London, one shaped by violence and inequality.

<text>Durham Miners Gala (aka The Big Meeting) is the biggest annual gathering in Britain to celebrate working class culture. A procession of brass bands and trade union banners is followed by a series of rousing speeches by left wing politicians and trade unionists in a field near the centre of Durham. This all provides a context and excuse for a massive communal street party. Rather than merely looking on, this project aims to document and participate in this party atmosphere and to engage positively with a community of which I am a part (I was a trade union organiser for many years). I can claim. According to Jamie MacDonald 'This series of photographs by Francis Fitzgerald presents a unique and insightful view of an enduring working-class culture – it is an honest celebration of community and solidarity".</text>
