<text>A Chennai food and beverage photo-book with a magazine style approach. We're planning on 5-10 issues in the series. Includes cafés, institutions, thallu vandis; தள்ளு வண்டி (push carts) and all our favourite people who work at & run these places. Although the subject is 'food', the book centers around the people who keep these places running. Made mostly with film, with few artist/writing features. It’s a love letter to our city in photo-book form. This book has a lot of tip-in work that’s done after printing and binding, offering what I believe is a tactile, journal-like feel. </text>

<text>Jim Mortram has worked with Image & Reality to redesign his first sold-out book, Small Town Inertia, adding never-seen-before photos and testimony.

For seven years Jim Mortram photographed the lives of people in his community. He made their daily struggles visible, as they struggled through physical and mental problems and a failing social security system. Through his camera and their testimony Small Town Inertia shows their isolation and the loneliness in their daily lives. His work covers difficult subjects such as disability, addiction and self-harm, but is always with hope and dignity. Small Town Inertia is a testimony to the strength and resilience of the people he photographs.

All participants know that they have been photographed, they know that they have spoken into Jim's microphone, all are collaborators, not and never subjects and all they profoundly wish is that their testimony will be heard. Paramount for Small Town Inertia, since its creation, has always been collaboration with his community and the amplification of their testimony. Mortram says "We don't live in a country where people have no voice, but people seldom listen and choose to look the other way."

With new photographs and testimony, this edition of Small Town Inertia is available for pre-order now. Delivery from the printers is confirmed and orders will ship from February 20th, 2026.</text>

<text>Throughout 1905, amateur photographer C. G. Hine spent his free hours roaming the length of New York’s Broadway, capturing the architectural oddities, street people, and botanical life of that storied street. He assembled these remarkable photographs into a hand-made, three-volume album titled From the Skyscraper to the Wildflower.
Ten years ago, historian Nick Yablon stumbled upon the album in the collections of the New York Historical Society. He now brings the album to a wider public in a new photobook, published by Columbia University Press. Through a series of short essays accompanying each photograph, Yablon reveals how Hine recorded a street under threat from developers, reformers, and others seeking to refashion it.</text>

<text>Finnish photographer Esko Mannikko works primarily in rich, saturated color. The work presented in this monograph was made in and around San Antonio and Batesville, Texas near the Mexican border.

From the essay by Maaretta Jaukkuri: "Texas offered Männnikkö visual plenitude and colourful mixtures of cultural traditions, as well as an encounter with the survival strategies that the Mexican population have created around themselves. In San Antonio and its surroundings, he met with a multitude of practices aimed at overcoming the tensions and boredom of daily toil and routine, with ingenious ways of creating possibilities for escaping into other worlds where things would look brighter, more colourful and more joyful. The private universes that we all in different ways create around us are a source of endless wonder and admiration in Männikkö's art. The energy used to create these private 'paradises' seems to be inexhaustible, while also telling us that the search for beauty, harmony and inspiration are an integral part of the human condition. The unblinking clarity of Esko Männikkö's images perforates complex social, cultural and individual life situations. Irrespective of geography and social systems, a kind of pattern of imbalance seems to emerge and repeat itself on the surface of these images. These imbalances seem to exist both in the scenes depicted and in the ways these scenes are looked at in other contexts. They are present both within the world of the images and in the worlds surrounding them when they are seen a artworks. Seen from a little bit closer, the very same imbalances seem to become a source of creativity and of new ways of looking about us.".</text>

<text>Christophe Gin has been awarded the 6th edition of the Carmignac Foundation’s Photojournalism Award, winning a €50,000 grant for Colonie, his work ruminating on lawless areas in France. Created in 2009, the award has sponsored photojournalism in conflict zones and neglected regions; previous winners include Robin Hammond (featured in our latest Portrait issue) and recent Magnum Photos nominee Newsha Tavakolian.

The award was mired in controversy last year, after Tavakolian contended that the foundation’s benefactor, French investment banker Edouard Carmignac began to interfere with with the presentation of her work to an “unacceptable” degree. The foundation disputed her remarks, claiming the postponing of her project was due to purported threats to the photographer’s safety, which it said Tavakolian reported.

It would seem any acrimony has abated, however – Tavakolian’s work will be part of the Carmignac Foundation’s upcoming retrospective at Saatchi Gallery, London. It features 40 works produced since the award’s inception by all laureates – Kai Wiedenhöfer, Massimo Berruti, Robin Hammond, David Monteleone, Tavakolian and this year’s winner Christophe Gin.

Colonie, Gin’s winning project delved into French Guiana, a region in South America that is officially a region of France, after the invasion and settlement by the French in the 18th century. The area has been associated with gold prospecting since the 19th century, and the booming market led to marked social and economic inequality, compounding fierce divides. The images suggest a tension and a history stretching back centuries that informs the way the various factions and communities in this region interact. We spoke to Gin about his interest in the region and the challenges he faced along the way.</text>
