In December 2013, six students died on Meco Beach. The tragedy may have been connected to Praxe — an ordeal for students holding senior positions within its hierarchy, in which ritual becomes a form of discipline, and discipline the language of belonging. In accounts of a ritual known as “Linha do Mar”, students stand blindfolded with their backs to the ocean. For each wrong answer, they take a step backwards — closer to the water. The ritual symbolizes purification through fear and a passage from darkness into light. Ignorance must be left behind in the ocean. This series of photographs makes use of a vernacular hand gesture, common in West Virginia, which serves as an impromptu map of the state. The drawn line that becomes visible in the final two images in the sequence corresponds to the route that was driven between Huntington and Buffalo. With this piece of personal geography mapped on my hand, I visited a palm reader, located along the route, to have the line interpreted, as it existed within the arrangement of my natural palm print. Out of the blue, sometime in the months ahead, our family history would be wiped away from the house so that another could start in the same place. From that moment, I started to document the many things that had created an illusion of belonging and possession in a place that had never been ours: the paintings on the wall, the arrangement of furniture, the way the spaces are occupied, the emptiness of all elements as workers stripped the flooring. Cantera aims to create a dialogue between the two predominant readings of the term household (readings that are mutually exclusive, opposed, and cannot be conceived in the presence of the other). The first reading views the house as property, as an asset for speculation and extraction. The second, the most familiar, conceives it in its purest definition as home and place we build to provide intimacy to a portion of the world where we soak up much of who we become.
