<text>Squeezed between the A2 and the walls of Greenwich Park lies Folly Pond; a largely forgotten and over-looked little body of water. Once a Victorian boating pond frequented by the ladies and gentlemen of Blackheath it has now returned to nature and is populated by ducks, coots, geese and the occasional rat.

The pond is a photographic antihero; a place to make pictures I feel are my own. The trees, reeds and other vegetation around the pond provide a varied backdrop from sparse silhouettes in winter, through vivid spring and summer greens to warm autumnal shades.

The images in this book are not of the pond and its surroundings; they are of the colours, patterns, textures, shadows and reflections these things create – ultimately, they are just of light.

<text>While visiting her nana in November 2019, Angela Christofilou joined one of her regular bingo games at St James Church Hall in Heywood, Lancashire. For years the activity was a space for locals to regularly gather and participate in the game.
Christofilou captures the special community atmosphere and energy of the group, all of whom were participants.

Bingo at the hall sadly came to an end due to lockdown and covid-19 restrictions, forcing members to stop socialising in such settings. This collection of 28 images is a commemoration of Heywood’s elderly community spirit, but also spotlights fading
cultural traditions in a post-pandemic, post-Brexit Britain. Church Bingo illustrates the importance to smile, and enjoy the finer things in life while we’re here - friends, a cuppa tea and bingo.</text>

<text>I Also Fight Windmills is the first photobook by the Polish-British artist Ania Ready who responded visually to literary texts written by the modernist, trilingual and largely forgotten author of Polish origin Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska (1872-1925; she died in a mental asylum in the UK). Ready has reimagined Gaudier-Brzeska’s story of a migrant woman from Eastern Europe who travelled west to Paris, New York and London to find employment, and above all to fulfil her ambition of becoming a writer. The rigid rules of the old societal order, the lack of opportunities for women, poverty and disillusionment led to her mental instability. The heaviest blow came with the loss of her partner – the modernist French sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska – in the First World War soon after she had sent him a rather mean-spirited letter.

By combining Ania Ready’s photography and Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska’s writing, I Also Fight Windmills explores the themes of displacement, creativity, loneliness, a disempowering sense of guilt, and social exclusion. Through re-enactment and the performative aspect of photography, it brings to life an undeservedly forgotten and sometimes stigmatized writer.

I Also Fight Windmills contains a book within a book, with literary texts presented separately from the visual story on smaller, yellow pages to resemble Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska’s archive. Ania Ready spent four years reading the writer’s manuscripts and travelling to rural Poland, Cracow, Lviv, Paris, New York, London, and Wotton-under-Edge to piece together her life. The findings of this research are captured in the biographical essay with which the book ends.

<text>This work is my first experience in creating photo books. It is a kind of collaboration between machine and human minds, as well as an experiment with form. I have chosen my favorite photographs over the past few years for this book. Most of them were taken on film while traveling within different countries - Russia, Armenia, Japan, Estonia, Spain and England. I took these photos intuitively as an emotional response to new experiences and impressions. While working with pictures, I tried to use a computer algorithm for compiling a sequence for the book. I created a slide show in “origami” style - such an option was available in the computer program. Photos appeared on the screen in random order, several pieces at once, changing not simultaneously, but in turn. Gathered this way, they gave me associations with sleeping and dreaming, with traveling to another reality. So, accidentally, in collaboration with a computer, I found an algorithm for assembling the book. And although the final version of the photo sequence in the book I created myself, the computer program helped me with the initial idea.
Now everything in the work surrendered to the idea of the dream. The shape of the book allows us to fall into the images, as we do in sleep. The name of the book - Rapid eye movement comes from the name of the phase of sleep in which we actually see dreams. While dreaming, the brain decides what information needs to be stored and remembered, searches for connecting threads between different pieces of information, moves the “data cards” through the “file cabinet” and builds them according to its own algorithms. In other words, sleep is a process that, on the one hand, is regulated by our brain, and on the other hand, is not completely controlled by us. As well as the idea and form of the book, partly given me by machine intelligence.
In the course of work, I added embroidery to some photos. I was captured by the idea of threads, that, on the one hand, connect sleep and reality, and, on the other, create an extra dimension, as it often happens in dreams. The book includes both scans of these embroideries, and pieces of real embroidery, handmade on the pages of the book. I sewed the book together also by hand.
Like a dream - you can start watching my book from any place. Although there are not a lot of texts in the book, I think you can even read fortune on it - ask a question and open it at a random page, and the photos will bring associations and give answers. All you have to do is accept my invitation to fall into this dream and allow yourself to fly away on the wings of fantasies.

<text>'As I walk this tidal path' is based on psychogeographic wanderings around the Thames estuary. Walking from Southeast London to Kent and Essex – through nature and industry – Anna explores her inner topography as well as the unique landscapes in front of her.

The book uses elements of the physical world and Anna’s inner world to create something new, a third space where the two merge. ‘Whilst it is a personal project, I believe it also has universal value,’ she explains. ‘In a time marked by ecological and mental health crises, the search for a deep connection with one’s environment is extremely relevant. Blending the mundane and the surreal, the work is an invitation to immerse oneself in the landscape.’

The book contains black-and-white analogue photographs taken on her walks. Hinting at the experience of finding things on a walk, the viewer of the book encounters a concertina fold-out as well as two loose sheets of tracing paper with text. The book was also produced as a limited artist’s edition with original cyanotypes as covers, hand-stitched with sailing twine (now sold out).</text>
