<text>The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989. For 28 years the Wall was a universal symbol of oppression and division. The 1.3 kilometre East Side Gallery is one of the largest open air galleries in the world and the longest surviving section of the Wall. It contains the work of over a hundred artists. It is visited by millions of people every year. It is a reminder that the desire for freedom, unity and creativity are stronger than tyranny. It has undergone extensive restoration over time. I visited the Gallery in 2016. I saw a small number of volunteers giving their time to painstakingly restore it. I saw a dynamic relationship between people, place and art. I saw care, appreciation, connection and expression. What I saw at East Side Gallery was far more than the sum of its original parts.</text>

<text>Elemer by Marton Perlaki describes a world of chances and combinations, revolving around the manipulation of one central figure before his camera. We do not know who Elemér is – indeed, Perlaki suggests we do not need to know – and as we witness him moving and appearing before the camera he is sculpted, both gesturally and literally. His movements, in turn, elicit the witty, hallucinatory and strange from simple still lives, landscapes and portraits made in Perlaki’s native Hungary.

Perlaki began Elemer after starting to collect cigarette cards – the disposable objects of the early 20th century that contain on one side, a household tip, and on the other, an image. He describes how ‘On first glance, the images look silly and nonsensical, but when flipped over these pictograms suddenly make sense’. This flipping of the card continues throughout Elemer – birds, bubbles, bricks, potatoes and Elemér himself are broken from their contexts, they crash and collide with one another. Within this form of bricolage – this flipping of the cards – Perlaki brings out the absurd from the factual, the delicate from the concrete.</text>

<text>Cidade Sombra, a photo book about Lisbon

‘The image we construct of a city is usually made up of a series of relatively pleasant and innocuous clichés: monuments, views, green spaces, landscapes populated or marked by architecture and advertisements that have become absorbed into the urban fabric. In one way or another, these elements are all present in the photography of Fernando Martins, but less as motif and more as something pre-existing, to which the apparent disorder of urban life adds meaning, but also raises questions. The image of the city is, therefore, subverted and our immediate impressions are challenged by certain “additions” that originate not in some deliberate urban planning scheme, but in the dynamics of everyday life.
Martins entitles his book Cidade-sombra (Shadow-city) and this is particularly appropriate for his aim is to capture and frame what escapes our immediate perception in order to build another vision of the city, in this case a city where daylight refects off the Tagus River and comes back at us enhanced. Martins' vision is essentially a nocturnal one, not because he has an especially saturnine temperament, but because the night, its shadows, its unsettling chiaroscuro, better allows for a consideration of what the day, with its nonchalant clarity, hides from view.’

<text>Photographer and life-long Tottenham Hotspur fan, Martin Andersen has turned his camera on his fellow fans to create ‘Can’t Smile Without You’, an intimate and often visceral collection of photographs taken at home, away, and across Europe from 2013 until 2017 with the last game played at the White Hart Lane stadium. Selected and edited from over one hundred different games, Andersen presents an authentic and unflinching documentation of the fans and their resultant relationships and community. His imagery depicts the drama, tensions, and raw emotions involved in such unwavering support of a football team that infiltrates every part of life.

Capturing a rapidly changing culture and a unique moment in Tottenham Hotspur’s history following the demolition of the 118 year-old stadium at White Hart Lane at the end of the 2016/17 season, the monochrome images in ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ also have a timeless quality that transcends the recent era they were taken in. These could be images of any diehard football fans and of the associated rituals, pre and post match, that are an integral part of being one.</text>

<text>A news media photographer for over forty years, Arthur Pollock created images that incorporated great depth and allure with a photojournalistic viewpoint. Reminiscent of the gritty, yet artistic style popularized by Weegee in the forties, the photographs in the book bring to light the daily travails that build the foundation of a city. Starting off professionally in Hammond, Indiana and Lowell, MA in the 1960’s, he documented day to day street level stories of the time, and cut his teeth on towns in the midst of an economic downturn. Hired on staff at the Boston Herald in the early eighties, he worked for over ten years on major features like the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and was the recipient of numerous awards throughout his time in the field before becoming Assistant Photo Editor at the end of the last decade. He passed away in 2018.</text>

<text>Negele Hospedales is an analogue photographer based in Hoxton, by way of Victoria, Canada. An active traveller working in the music industry, he has spent the last few years living and visiting various destinations between North America, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean. The Otherside is Negele’s first full length photo publication, highlighting a 2019 trip to the remote Lofoten Islands in the Norweigan artic circle. The book is inspired by classic coming-of-age films and follows Negele and his friends Maria and Aapo on their week-long unplanned expedition. The collection of photos are the final selection of 11 rolls of 35mm Kodak professional film captured during the road-trip. Sequence based with minimal text – aside from hand-written notes, as well as an official soundtrack (featuring Rex Orange County, Ziggy Marley, Jay Prince and more) – The Otherside is for you to interpret.</text>

<text>The photobook collects a series of sceneries exclusively black and white photographs taken throughout the years, all shot on film with a Holga 120. Each photo paired up a page written in poetical prose, that altogether form a whole novel. (27 photos matching 27 pages of novel). To underline the expressive power of analog photography, each written page is graphically textured, marked and bruised as the film the photographer shot his pictures on.

The concept underneath it is simple: influenced by the work of photographer James Nachtway, by the literary works of E.A.Poe and by his own experience of living in a country that has and is still going through much ordeals, in this book the author takes the reader with him throughout the journey of a raven, only living thing, an omnipresent and omniscient symbol: a silent witness that documents the utter loneliness of a world deprived of its humanity. </text>
